  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will New Color Science be useable in camera via Firmware Update?

Hey guys. I know there has been some talk about this, but I'm confused on the issue. Will cameras built after the new color science is released include the new CS in-camera? Where as cameras pre-CS release will never have this functionailty (only in post)? I have my finger on the trigger to buy a Weapon Helium but I would wait a little while if it meant I could use Helium Color in camera.

Yes Helium Color Science will be released in a firmware update when its ready.

Yea I heard that - but I'm positive I read somewhere that it will only be available to use in post, not in-cam.

From my recollection that was only to get Dragon footage to match helium footage. I may be wrong but thats what I remember.

Waiting to pull the trigger is only putting you farther at the end of the line. :)
For any Helium, the new color science will be available in-cam... The "POST" issue is ONLY related to non-Helium sensors. As soon as it is released you'll have instant access to it "IN-CAM" via firmware update.

What John, Rakesh and I have said: link to Jarred's quote

That's what Jarred said when he talked about it; he said that Helium has a new imaging pipeline, and the new color science would work in post to facilitate matching Dragon and Helium footage.

Whatever they offer will apply to all Helium cameras. Not just those built after the new CS is released. Now as far as will in camera and post offer the same capability? I don't know. I tend to think you can always do more in post as you are not limited to real-time.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I pulled the trigger on the Weapon!

Maybe this is something that needs to be clarified because I believe a lot of people out there think of the new color science is only in RedCine X Pro, and not a firmware update that will alter the way the camera processes color out of the camera.

Maybe worth a brief explanation from red or the big G

So first, I need to disambiguate a bit...

Colour Science is the colorimetry calibration that takes raw sensor data and puts it into accurate colours. That is always in place for each and every camera and OLPF combination.

An image processing pipeline is the algorithms (and implementation) that uses the data from the colour science to produce an image.

Current Helium camera firmware is using the existing image processing pipeline. A new image processing pipeline is in development and the Helium based cameras have the extra hardware processing necessary to run it, and this will be enabled via future firmware update. For our other cameras, the benefits of the new image processing pipeline will be available via REDCine-X (and SDK).

I was told I would be able to get a new COLOR Science not a new COLOUR Science. :wink5:

Thanks for chiming in Graeme.

I know a lot of people in MA who were confused about this, so thank you Graeme for clarifying.

Based on what we're seeing from the Helium already, it's going to be very interesting to see what the color is like when we get the Helium color.

I guess that also implies that that main benefit that Helium owners will get that Dragon owners do not is in the ProRes/DNxHR options, since those have their color baked in?

Either way, the most exciting thing about the Helium for me is its color; 2nd most exciting is matching the resolution of my A7R. :)
