  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will 300x be enough?

Might as well say why not:

The CF cards are not fast enough for the higher framerates and better redcodes, so it will not look as good as you could get it on the SSD's

You can still buy them from the store. The last we heard is that the Scarlet would be SSD, and they were talking about having a CF adapter that slid into the SSD Module. Regarding the speed I'd probably use what RED offers you media wise to deal with the data rates and frame rates it will shoot. They are pricey though so I can understand wanting to use an alternate option.

600x might be. It will depend really on the REDCODE, resolution, and audio options. Best bet is to wait and see. You may be investing in SSDs for your material if it suits your needs.

It's a bit disturbing to spend around $3250 on media, (4x64Gb SSDs), never have in my life!

The CF cards I have would be ideal, money wise, but if 300x doesn't cut it....

I remember buying 4 GB P2 cards for $600 each!

No, P2 was just P2, another very expensive media for Panasonic cameras only...when I bought CFs + NEXTO backup storage device I really thought they were going to be good enough for Scarlet

Thoughts from a working man and observer.

1000 feet of Super35 stock gives you about 11 minutes of recording time if you super efficient, one time use = $400-$500

Now let's talk about Red Epic (it's the only thing I have to go on here).
Approximate times with 128GB card based on 24fps depending on the REDCODE compression ratio.
*I wrote this down a while ago, so correct me if I'm wrong.

5K - 14-56 minutes
4k - 23-93 minutes
3k - 41-165 minutes
2k - 83-330 minutes

Basically 64GB SSD at 5:1 compression at 5k gives you around 15 minutes of roll time. If you are used to working on features or film cameras this is good mindset to have.

One of the advantages of Scarlet potentially being a 2k, 3k, or 4k camera is it does make the recording media slightly more accessible to a wider market at a price versus performance stand point.

That said, I haven't heard numbers on if 600x CF cards are fast enough for 3k or 4k with high compression and with audio. I think they could handle 3k and potentially 4k though at say 5:1. But, we'll know more in a month and I'm no mind reader.

Good quality 600x 64GB cards right now are around $500. 128GB is about $1000.

Currently you can purchase a 128GB REDMAG SSD for $1800 and we "know" that will work with the Scarlet whatever the specs are.

Ya, I also remember buying my first P2 Media. $900 for 16GB, it made paying $3000ish for 256GB SSD not feel quite so bad. Personally as much as I'd love to save money, I really think you will be kicking yourself down the line if you don't buy the Red Media or even more importantly go the SSD route. Reliability and Speed of recording media are crucial in any type of videography you may do. It will be a well spent investment and is compatible with all Red Cameras, so when/if you decide to upgrade to Epic, it doesn't go obsolete on you.

CF is dead.

The RED 16GB cards may be supported, they are roughly 650X or so. Looks like there won't be a CF module, but rather a CF adapter to put the CF into the SSD slot. For anyone who currently doesn't own any RED CF cards, the SSD media makes more sense -- they are cheaper per GB than the RED CF cards.

Don't want to speculate too much seeing how we're just a month away from knowing all. The above info is all based on the state of media as we currently know it.

I'm really hoping for some big price reductions on the SSD media here in the near future. And given the rate of sales on that SSD media, one would think the economies of scale should start to kick in. Especially with the flood of EPIC-X cameras that are about to start flowing out of RED and soon, Scarlet...

Say there was a SSD, not Red branded, of the same/similar quality - has anyone tried something like this with Epic or Red One? Would it work? I would assume it would not be recommended.
