Widest Lens for your Scarlet?

Trying to figure out the widest EF mount lens that I can use on my Scarlet (SO 1132).
Any idea on what it will take to cover the sensor at 4K?
With the crop factors, I worry about tight situations where simply stepping back will not be possible.
Any idea if the new Canon 8-15mm would work or is the fisheye too wide?

Thanks,
Ryan

The 4k crop of the MX is smaller than Canon's APS-C. So anything that works on APS-C,as in any EF-S lenses, will work on Scarlet at 4k vignette free (assuming their vignette free on APS-C sensors).

Epic/Scarlet/Red1 at 4k is virtually identical width to APS-C at 22mm. Same horizontal crop factor. It is not as tall since it is 1.89:1 widescreen cinema format.

The Tokina 11-16 2.8 is a really lovely lens for it's price point. It's rather beautiful at 16mm, especially when it's on a Steadicam.

On my 5D Mark II the Tokina is effectively a 16mm prime because of the vignetting, but I am looking forward to getting full use out of this beautiful zoom with our Scarlet-X.

if shooting < 4K

if shooting < 4K

I've been looking at the specs for the Sigma AF 8-16mm . Yes, the Tokina 11-16 is faster by a stop, but I plan to shoot a lot at 3K cropping, outdoors mostly, so maybe the speed won't matter as much.
The other thing to be aware of when shooting at less than 4k is the lens sharpness at the extreme edges doesn't matter any more, because the cropping cuts it off. So it's more about center field sharpness in cropped modes.

Ultra Wides Available for Scarlet X in EF mount for 4k motion use as of November 2011.

Rectilinear:

-Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6
-Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5
-Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5
-Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6
-Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
-Tokina 12-24mm f/4
-Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6
-Canon 14mm f/2.8L

Fisheye:

-Sigma 8mm f/3.5
-Sigma 10mm f/2.8
-Canon 8-15mm f/4L
-Tokina 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5
-Canon 15mm f/2.8
-Sigma 15mm f/2.8
-Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 (Circular, not full frame, could be useful for 2k/1k)

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 seems to be the shooters choice as it's pretty wide and has a fairly fast fixed aperture zoom. Not much competing there in terms of light gathering. There is a real lack of rectilinear prime lenses below 14mm. I'd bet we will see a 10mm or 12mm EF mount prime in the near future. Somewhere between f/1.8 and f/2.8.

The Tokina 11-16 F2.8 is simply the best ultra wide angle lens I have ever owned. You can't go wrong with it.

Sound more & more like the Tokina 11-16 will be a goto lens for Scarlet. Mmmm better start trawling Ebay. Amazon has them for about $700 ish. I've noticed, as new, 2nd ones going for about $550. Seems a lot of people buy new , shoot a couple of shots notice the vignetting (on full frame) and then dispose of.

+10 for the duclos 11-16. Can't wait to put that badass mofo on my scarlet in 5K for stills.....

Timur, I'm aware the Duclos 11 - 16 has a PL mount, aperture ring and some other differences, but aside from functionality are you aware if the image produced will differ from the stock $700 Tokina 11 - 16?

Has anyone used the sigma 8mm with an APS-C or Epic? I know it doesn't cover the full FF35 sensor so I would be curious how much of the image circle is covered by Scarlet.

If you are referring to the Sigma 8mm fisheye it vignettes on 5k and 4k. Their rectilinear zoom should cover 4k with no problem.

Well in the case of a fish eye I'm actually glad it vignettes. :) The more it vignettes, the more fov I get out of it.
