  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I use a dragon, and i am planning to do a lot of b roll in nature this year. I'm looking to get a solid lens wider than my 25mm zeiss, so i can overcrank on a crop sensor without losing so much ground. Currently all i have is a tokina 11-16 and canon 16-35 ii.

So far, my first choice was a leica r 19mm, v2, or a zeiss 15mm..
my budget is around $3k, but i would consider higher priced options (4k) if the optics made sense, of course within reason. Ideally i could find something in the 2k range though..

Im not very familiar with leica m's, but i heard those cover 6k FF as well.

I suppose i'm partial to leica because i also have a 35-70 so it would increase my leica range, and i love the image.
But the zeiss 15mm is solid and sharp throughout the image, which is important to me especially in low light conditions where i would need to open up the iris.

Any gems that i should be aware of? Or do i just need to save up for that zeiss 16-30 :)

I like my Zeiss 15mm 2.8, I also use the Canon Cine 14mm 3.1, I haven't really compared the 2 but I know a guy who says the Canon 14 is better than the zeiss 15...

The Zeiss 15mm is considered by many to be best in class. The MTFs are certainly pretty awe inspiring..

cool, thanks for the suggestions, the sigma 18-35 certainly loks like a great option for speed, will it cover the full sensor at 6K? it says APS C rated, so perhaps its 'just' big enough.. and i wonder if they make a cine-housed version.

i'm certainly leaning towards the 15mm Zeiss, it's a very beautiful lens. but i'm kind of torn because the leica 19mm looks pretty amazing too!! damn..

other than that, i'm also open to hearing any other esoteric or vintage options. some of those old angenieux's look amazing, and aren't too bad in price, but it seems like a lot of them are S16 sized..

also, this looks very interesting.. I'll have to investigate what the different tokinas do..

I use a Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 zoom. This lens offers impressive sharpness and lens geometry and is a big step up from the Canon 16-35. The opposite focus travel is a pain in the ass and it requires an adaptor with iris control to go on my EF mount but the lenses performance is so good it's worth the inconvenience.

I'm personally pretty into the Zeiss 15mm design. It's one of their newer optics and is pretty banging, I do think it's "better" than the Canon 14mm for sure. It also doesn't exhibit some of the distortion that the wide zooms mentioned here have. The Canon 11-24mm f/4 lens is impressive and wider, but it's a full stop slower.

The Sigma 18-35 covers 6k from 21mm. Nan @ GL optics does a nice rehouse but it's a touch more than $3000. I have this lens and use it often in 6K and 5K. It's sharp for a zoom and remains sharp out to the edges. It's rated @ a 1.8 but I consistently see if coming in @ 2.0. If you need a solid image it'll do the job, though it may not be as fancy as some of the Canon's or Zeiss lenses being discussed.

thanks for your feedback, phil. do you have any further to share between the zeiss 15mm, the sigma ART, and the leica r 19mm?
these are the ones i'm most seriously considering. everything else, well, is slightly better than what i've got, but overlaps with what i've already got in my bag..

the main obvious factor between the zeiss 15mm and leica 19mm would be the extra width of the zeiss, but there is something about the leica image that i really love matched up with the dragon sensor, especially with the low light olpf. and somehow i feel myself gravitating towards these two optics.

And thanks for the feedback everybody, gives me a lot to think about. !!
