I need a wide angle lens to shoot scenes in a car with. My 24mm won't get wide enough when shooting 4K.
12 or 16mm would be great, but I can't afford to spend more than 1k on the lens. Seems like most wide angle lenses are for APS-C... :-/

Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Kaspar

Given you are shooting in a car - I would also recommend either the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 ($ 800,- USD), or the Samyang/Rokinon 16mm T2.2 ($ 480,- USD).

Both will cover Scarlet-MX @ 4K and Scarlet Dragon @ 5K as these formats on the Scarlet match the APS-C spec of these lenses...
The zoom will give you both more light and the ability to reframe without having to move the camera...
The Samyang/Rokinon will give you wider angle at 16mm - but you are getting less light...

If you need wider still - I love the Canon's 14mm f/2.8L II - but that is a $2.5K lens.
Its cheaper equivalent is the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm T3.1 (f/2.8) - which is a bargain at $ 374,- USD!!!

If you want to go even wider - then the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is the way to go...

Rokinon cine 16mm works pretty well.

If you want something with IS, have a look at the new Canon 16-35/4.0 IS L. Anything else has already been mentioned, with the SIGMA 18-35/1.8 being my favorite, it beats the Canon 16-35/2.8 II L, unless you really want to go wider than 18mm.

I would even name the 10-18 with IS, but unfortunately it can't be focused currently, RED needs to add support. Canon's older 10-22 is also worth a look i think.

Instead of buying you could also rent that 15mm Zeiss. That thing is a bomb.

So that lens does that cover a full 5K? ('cuz 5K is actually APS-H)

Terry - he is asking for Scarlet. MX Scarlet can't shoot 5K beyond the 15 fps and 5K on Dragon Scarlet is APS-C (just as the 4K on MX)...

Things to consider for me, include:

How horribly bad does it flair? (most 14mm/15mm are horrible)
How possible is it to use a mattebox/add filtration to the lens? (most 14mm/15mm lenses make this difficult)
Does it have gears, de-clicked aperture, hard stops? Samyang is the only super affordable winner here.
How well does it perform wide open? Samyang performs EXTREMELY well wide open >

How much does it cost compared to other 'fast' wide angle lenses?
How is the distortion? Samyang 16mm is nicer than Tokina 11-16mm, and faster, and has clicks, and gears.
Does it have a red line around it to make you look professional?

Here are some other examples from my Samyang 16. I use it more than any other lens these days :)

True, though bare in mind the FOV of 5K Dragon is actually wider than 4K MX.

4K Scarlet MX...the FOV closer to ACADEMY 35mm...whereas FOV of 5k Dragon Scarlet is closer to SUPER 35mm 4perf...

Yes, of course...:

The point was that both will fit in APS-C and will be covered by these lenses...

Agreed, really cool stuff Matt! And i realized i'm still underestimating those Samyang lenses. :) The 16mm looks indeed nice.
I'm currently looking for the "ultimate" UWA-lens for gimbal shots, this is probably worth a testing round.

Would love to see how it compares to the Zeiss 15mm.

For what it's worth... I shot this video on my Scarlet with Lomos...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM8JIh9HzfY

...but I intercut a couple WA shots, like of the dolly in and out, and left and right, on stage, where I needed to see more, since the stage wasn't too deep. I used my Tokina 116 Pro AT-X II 11-16 f/2.8 for it

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/882236-REG/Tokina_atx116prodxn_ii_AT_X_116_PRO_DX_II.html

Some of the WA shots, from the above video were at;

:48 - The band running toward the theater

...and basically anything on stage without the lens flares, like the drummer at 2:43.

Hopefully that helps a little. I think it cut pretty well with the anamorphics.
