  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why to not like RED...

Not to mention not even for sale to the general public yet!

Last time I checked, anyone can buy EPIC-M and they ship within a day or two of payment. Still a heck of a lot cheaper than Alexa and the EPIC-M Pack ($43K) is only $4500 more than the already announced EPIC-X price for 2012 customers. Small premium to pay if you need it now.

Really?

Not only is your statement incorrect, you seem interested in discrediting my assertion that Alexa wonks gloss over the bumps along the way in its maturation process.

In any case, each camera system has strengths, weaknesses and its own particular personality instilled by its provenance. I can also assure you that there were a lot of impatient folks out there who waited a good long time to get their Alexa's while production ramped up.

Now, how about Mac v Windows or Nikon v Canon or .... :bang head:

Where do you get $43k? The EPIC M package is and always has been $58k.

Your overall point of a surprisingly low price for M is valid, but no reason to be inaccurate about the actual price ...

Yep---check the RED store. you can now buy the EPIC M body only for $43k....not the M Package with all the extras.

.....it was news to me as well when i was on red store other day...but with RED you have to stay up with them on internet a lot to know what's new....which of course is rather a benefit that they can do so much and change to market quickly.

The EPIC-M "Pack" is the EPIC-M Brain, Ti PL Mount and Side SSD Module for $43K. If you subtract out the price of the SSD module and Ti PL Mount, you get $39,500 for the Brain alone. That is also the price of the EPIC-M Brain as a line item in the full $58K EPIC-M kit. The 2012 price for the EPIC-X Brain alone is $35K. That is a difference of $4500.

People keep looking at EPIC-M as if it's hugely expensive. The full $58K kit includes touch LCD, BOMB EVF, media, etc... Compared to Stage-2 and Stage-3 programs the EPIC-M does seem expensive. But that does not cover the "general public". Those are special programs and Stage-2 is an insane deal. The "general public" can buy EPIC-M now for the starting price of $43K for the brain with PL mount and SSD module. Stage-4 (everyone can buy one) price for EPIC-X Brain alone in 2012 will be $35K or $38,500 for the Brain plus Ti PL Mount and Side SSD Module. It does seem as if there will be a small window of opportunity at the end of this calendar year to pre-order an EPIC-X Stage-4 camera at the old low price for the Brain -- to the tune of a $6K discount or about that. So if the timing works out for you, then wow, great. But if you need the camera now, the extra premium for EPIC-M now can be more than worth it.

Epic-M was my first very Red product. I had a working camera ready to shoot less than a week after payment was sent.

Blair, within the context of RED being criticised for not being roadworthy upon release: I think Matt meant his post to read " the (production) camera is not even for sale and it's already being dragged over the coals for being incomplete". Or something to that effect.

Blair and Jeff, you guys misunderstood me. As Bill correctly guessed (see previous post), what I meant was: the (production) camera is not even for sale and it's already being dragged over the coals for being incomplete. Point being, by the time someone can buy an Epic X in Stage 4, in camera playback may be working just fine.

Thanks Bill, that is exactly what I meant.
