There are lots of reasons why not to like RED. And there are plenty of RED-haters out there.

1. We are not the establishment. Quite the contrary.

2. We talk too much about "what we might do, what we are going to do, or what we are thinking about". Then we change our minds. Several times.

3. You have to upgrade firmware too much. We keep enabling features and improving performance. While this is often a good thing, it forces our customers to pay attention.

4. We are in a constant state of back order. You see it, you want it... you have to wait for it.

5. There isn't enough info available. RED is short on written support, manuals and training tools.

6. While there is no question that RED is pushing the industry along (and has for the past 5 years)... RED "over-markets". Like 4K. Like RAW. Like everything...

7. RED is always late. This could actually be #1. RED says October. By the time it is done it is June two years later. Valid complaint.

It is easy to see why RED has polarized the industry. We are the good news and the bad news. We are pushing the envelop and at the same time we have no idea what we are doing... actually we are just beginning to figure out what we are doing. If someone else is thinking 10, RED is thinking 500. 500 has lots of problems because no one has ever been there before. Getting to 500 is difficult... way more difficult than anyone might imagine. That's why the other guys don't shoot for 500. We do. Silly us.

If there is anything good about RED... it is the core belief that 1080P (or 2K) is not a reasonable replacement for film. We started our business based on this belief. Finally, it seems like others have finally agreed. No matter what happens going forward, our success and legacy will be based on this simple thought. 1080P is not good enough. 4K delivery is.

We know we are the black sheep of the industry. Oh well. When all is said and done, RED will have moved the industry to a better place.

Now... we are not done. We fully expect to be disruptive going forward. We are just getting started. We are building a library of knowledge that we can leverage for the future. But we have lots of things to improve on. If other companies can keep pace, God love them.

Expect us to surprise you. When we stop doing that, we have no right to be under consideration.

Until then... stay tuned. We have a lot more coming.... lots of big surprises.

Jim

Tuned and squinting - The future has never looked so bright.

Oh, and whichever way you cut it - At the end of the day, RED is about 5 years early.

I think we are all very fortunate that a man with your means has a love for cameras. You put the costly burden of trial and error, research and development onto yourself. It is very much appreciated.

Points 1, 2 and three are why I like RED.
What I like most about RED is that a single bloke has in one step taken all the latest technology and ideas and delivered a camera package and accessories at a cost that does not include the purchaser paying for shiny suits, long service leave and pensions for middle and upper management.

Can I post on this thread what I don't like about RED?

We are with you Jim!

All points valid and true...but it could not be any other way...this is the RED way...and the right way

There is no timetable for dreams to come true

RED is polarizing no doubt.

I think this is Great! We are in the business of selling emotion.
I love getting emotional when talking about my RED, it reminds me what the point is.
If your story dosent move people you are wasting your time.

I say make em see RED!

Just keep shipping buddy - that will shut even me up! Seriously, right now you have at least 2 years of ridiculously killer ideas that are way ahead of the industry. If all you did was produce and perfect what is in the queue RED would dominate. Ship Ship Ship and we'll Buy Buy Buy.

I have to say... without the support of many here, I would not have kept going. This is hard stuff.

If RED thrives, it is because of you.

Keep on rocking - this modular idea really hit home today.
Until people attach their first module - they truly wont appreciate
how fucking genius this methodology really is.

And the scary shit is - its all old news to you guys :)

You may have given us 10 reasons not to like Red, but there is only one reason to like Red that even matters: you aren't Sony, Canon, Panasonic, or Panavision.

These companies either:
1. Didn't want to advance technology and give filmmakers the best tools possible.
--OR--
2. Only wanted to market to studios and not to a guy like myself.

If I needed more than one reason to appreciate Red, there are only three that come to mind:
1. R
2. E
3. D

Continue to be the only reason that matters. We need it.

My father shot Hasselblad in the 60's. I was in awe that a camera they designed in the 50's could still be accessorized and upgraded 50 years later. The Epic engineering is the closest I have seen to that design. I would be proud to shoot with your product sir.

Muwahahaha :-)

Jim, I'm looking at the footage I've shot in the last few weeks and trying to scoop my jaw off the ground. So many people don't realize how truly amazing Epic is.

I'm so deeply happy to be part of the Red train. Keep on!

If "Innovation" wasn't a valid reason for these - #1 and #3 are good things, #2 and #7 are perfectly reasonable as every post has that "Everything changes" disclaimer (the polarizing opinion is largely due to the fact that people fail to read the disclaimer, I think. Also, as far as I am concerned, EPIC is still a few years early), #4 is a sign of success, #6 is what companies do and that leaves us with #5 as the only area where RED could work on. I wouldn't change a thing, just continue innovating, that's all we want.
