  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why to not like RED...

It's the 10:500 ratio that's key for me.

Other firms, even if they could achieve 250, they'll make more money trickling out 10, then 20, then 50 and so on. There's no appetite for this practice with RED, and that's why we love 'em.

RED just want to make the absolute best camera that today's technology can achieve, say a 300, and then work around the clock to surpass that before (finally) releasing a 500!

Keep up the Good work Jim. No company is perfect, but RED is close. I'd rather have the RED problems of today, than the industry love affair with 1080p in 2007.

R.I.P.
1080P

I have to say... without the support of many here, I would not have kept going. This is hard stuff.

If RED thrives, it is because of you.

Jim

I would not be in Chicago doing the work that I am doing without RED... I am thriving because of you and your incredible team.

And thank you very much for the opportunity to shoot 35mm everyday.

I'm a late adopter to RED, the Epic M is my first RED camera. But I'm already a hugh fan. Not simply because of the quality of the image the camera produces, but the fact that RED continually improve their product with Firmware upgrades. I expect software on my computer to get better, and have more features, why my camera?
And that it doesn't cost me to upgrade!

The fact that a camera is something that evolves and improves, both from a modular perspective and software perspective is something no other company I know of is doing!

In addition, any technical question I've ever had about the camera, workflow, how I might build my package, or new products has all been found in one of threads. This is an impressive group of technically proficient professionals that I have learned a lot from.

Keep on doing what you're doing, it's working! and I can't wait to see what's next.

You know what? I'll put up with the backorders and missed delivery dates if it means I get to shoot with a camera that gives me the best images of any camera in the world. Sure it is frustrating waiting. But, let me tell you, the day my RED One arrived, the 16 months of waiting seemed to evaporate immediately. Nothing else I have ever bought has made me so happy. I'm looking forward to enjoying the same experience when my Epic arrives. Keep it up Jim and Company. We will be here when you are ready.

Yeah ... I'm a huge fan.

I think RED always has the right idea. I quibble about this and that, but man you guys rock. Pushing the tech and yourselves to 11 ... the only way to go.

Made in USA is another reason I love Red. The US needs more of these types of jobs in places other than the defense industry.

Well said Jim...

Haters are easily turned in to Lovers as soon as things do go their way, everyone over 20 years ago told me not to go to America, I would never amount to nothing there...

Well, today, while I still have sure lot to go... I have made something of myself thanks to that decision made over 20 years ago in a believe for myself...

Now all of those same people that said so, say... see, I knew you would make something of yourself... ;)

RED is and wil be just about the same, were all those haters... Will soon turn al in favor, as they will simply be faced with the Naked Truth of reality, and what RED is offering, and how the Industry has Embraced.

As far as what RED is, beside been really a Family to me, I hope that on the Company side of things, we are ding what ever little might be, something which always reflects in favor of RED... ;)

Can't wait for more... ;)

We have hoped to engage the competition in a battle of specs. It only helps the customer.

Jim

Specs is for geeks - RED is for the soul

Finally, it seems like others have finally agreed.
Jim

You've got this all wrong. :)
See, agree and submit is not the same thing. The others don't agree. It should rather read: "Finally, it seems like others have finally submitted." (Other than the incorrect double use of the word "finally" in one sentence...hiehie)
I'm hopelessly naive: Fish rot from the head, therefore, the head of the co must be the hardest worker and the biggest nerd. A business is its people. Charge what you should, not what you could. The moment you stop loving what you do, then stop doing it.

You make life much more interesting! Every morning I wake up like it's Christmas because I know on one of those mornings I will see it
- YOUR STAGE 2 EPIC X IS READY TO SHIP-

I love the backorders, I love the underdog, I love Red!

There are lots of reasons why not to like RED. And there are plenty of RED-haters out there.

1. We are not the establishment. Quite the contrary.

2. We talk too much about "what we might do, what we are going to do, or what we are thinking about". Then we change our minds. Several times.

3. You have to upgrade firmware too much. We keep enabling features and improving performance. While this is often a good thing, it forces our customers to pay attention.

4. We are in a constant state of back order. You see it, you want it... you have to wait for it.

5. There isn't enough info available. RED is short on written support, manuals and training tools.

6. While there is no question that RED is pushing the industry along (and has for the past 5 years)... RED "over-markets". Like 4K. Like RAW. Like everything...

7. RED is always late. This could actually be #1. RED says October. By the time it is done it is June two years later. Valid complaint.

It is easy to see why RED has polarized the industry. We are the good news and the bad news. We are pushing the envelop and at the same time we have no idea what we are doing... actually we are just beginning to figure out what we are doing. If someone else is thinking 10, RED is thinking 500. 500 has lots of problems because no one has ever been there before. Getting to 500 is difficult... way more difficult than anyone might imagine. That's why the other guys don't shoot for 500. We do. Silly us.

If there is anything good about RED... it is the core belief that 1080P (or 2K) is not a reasonable replacement for film. We started our business based on this belief. Finally, it seems like others have finally agreed. No matter what happens going forward, our success and legacy will be based on this simple thought. 1080P is not good enough. 4K delivery is.

We know we are the black sheep of the industry. Oh well. When all is said and done, RED will have moved the industry to a better place.

Now... we are not done. We fully expect to be disruptive going forward. We are just getting started. We are building a library of knowledge that we can leverage for the future. But we have lots of things to improve on. If other companies can keep pace, God love them.

Expect us to surprise you. When we stop doing that, we have no right to be under consideration.

Until then... stay tuned. We have a lot more coming.... lots of big surprises.

Jim

Its like the Rebel Alliance vs. the Empire. And we know who wins in the end (with multiple CGI incarnations!!!).

RED might be small, but you have a small but loyal 10,000 people who do believe in you (is 10,000 about right with all the camera's that RED has shipped?) ;-)

Personal views on Jim's points:

1. Cool - don't want the establishment!!!!
2. Sounds like life!
3. Hmmm, if I never upgraded my first gen iPhone where would I be - change is good - in fact its great!
4. Supply / Demand - I say just create an initial 10,000 unit order of everything for everyone (some might not take one, some will take more!)
5. There is more than enough information available if you know where to look and pay attention... ;-)
6. Why shouldn't you BIG it up. Anyone who works with RED and believes in RED evangelises the benefits as well as the pitfalls
7. RED might be late, but in the end, you actually get a better product because of all the above! I've waited two years for my EPIC-X stage 4, and I'm still waiting. Why do I wait? Because I know I'm getting the best camera system in the world thats good enough for the likes of Steven Soderbergh, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, etc. etc. etc.

EDIT - look how many haters there was for the original iPhone - no 3G, no picture messaging etc, Now look at it. Its slowly taking over the world and people are buying it in droves...

Jim, you build Oakley into the business it is today and its done pretty good ;-) I think we know that you have some idea of what your doing (business wide).

So who would I bank my money on - see my above 7 views on your 7 points.

:-)

This is hard stuff.

Never the less THE RIGHT STUFF.

RED Digital Cinema, I think, largely addresses customers with a special kind of temperament. Beside the "uncontrollable" ingenuity I am personally attracted by the forthright and honest style of communication. If we thrive, it is because of you. A large company, not with an anonymous and abstract, but very personally and very human, face. Looking so much forward too 3. nov., and the future and wild surprises beyond - including changes!

Simon
