  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why is the Red 300mm so cheap?

Red's18-100 primes are several times the price of equivalent focal lengths from Nikon/Canon while their 300 is about the same as Nikon/Canon's.

Is the 300 not of the same caliber as the 18-100?

Or is it just that Red has similar margins on all their primes while Nikon/Canon set higher-than-usal margins on their 300s?

The RED 300mm prime is a sharp lens with nice contrast. IMHO the price is fair for what you get.

Pros & Cons:

I happen to like the bokeh, some might not care for it, a matter of taste in my book.

The reality is that a 300mm prime, from anyone, is a limited use lens in the real world.

That said, some of my favorite shots were on that lens...

I've owned the Red 300 for years, and thought of it as a specialty lens and therefor rarely used it. Finally I decided I wanted to really get to know it, so I shot a short using only the Red 300 for every single shot, now I LOVE the Red 300, it's a gorgeous lens.
Here's the short if you want to see it http://vimeo.com/22505806

Thanks Jason!

That shot was particularly cool and was thanks to my AC Jerry Turner, he brought some diopters and we got that with the 300 as well (as all shots in this short were).

I now have possession of Blair's 300 Red and I qute like it. My Nikon 300mm f2.8 VRII might be a hair sharper wide open but it's really splitting that hair.

hot damn

I've owned a lot of Nikon and Canon long glass and the 300mm f/2.8G VR I was insane...from what i've seen the VRII is even better. If the Red 300mm is this good with cine-style mechanics at that price, I'd say it's a pretty darn good lens.

I have the original RED 300mm and every time I use it, clients are blown away with the image.
It's one of my favorite lenses.

James, those pictures are beautiful! I particularly love the leaf shots!

RED 300mm is one of my favorites. Use it a LOT! The old version and new version are optically the same. Newer RPP version has better mechanics in an updated housing to match the RPPs. Old model had integrated point to attach a support. Newer model does not -- and it's fairly light for it's size and focal length. I don't use a support with it on the Ti PL mount unless the camera is going to be moving around. If there's a chance I'm going to grab the camera, tripod and all, and throw it on my shoulder to run up a hill, I'll put a lens support on. Using the Zacuto one. It's simple and it works.

Which Zacuto model specifically? Would it work with the 18-85mm too on the clutch?

Jeff, how do you feel about the Bokeh on the 300? I don't know how many iris blades it has... Have any images you could post with different lighting conditions?

+1 on the lens support question.

Also it looks like Format is the only company that makes a full range of 43mm NDs. Do you know if they drop in OK?

I'd be curious to get opinions on the RPP 300 vs the Canon 300 f/2.8L IS or the 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II on an EPIC (in terms of optical performance).

I like the fact that the Nikkor and Canon lenses both have slip in rotating circular pola filters. I don't know of any such option on the RPP 300.

Anyone know if the "Power Focus" mode on the Canon would be supported on the EPIC autofocus so you could track a moving subject?

Lastly, does the RPP 300 cover 5K? I would assume so, but not sure.

Would still love to get my questions answered on the RP 300 :)

Anyone??
