Me as many is in desperate need of the EPIC now. Recently I've found myself using 5D's for commercial work for a lot of reasons. Mainly they've been used as small and easily used cameras in confined spaces. I shoot RED (own a few) and film. I haven't used Alexa for the reason that I've come to love RED (for obvious reasons, as I own some), but wouldn't mind to use the Alexa if that was required. Right tool for the job. BUT lately I've used a lot of DSLR for grab and run shots in my commercials. I have to admit it works perfectly and it has most of the time not been a problem making the shots match with our other A or B-cam material (mainly RED), but every time I stand there with the 5D in hand I can't help but swear and say WhyTF isn't this an EPIC instead LOL. I've used the 5D on international commercial campaigns and where not talking small clients. It's been everything from car commercial shoots to bank commercials. Mainly I've used them for easy access, if we've needed to travel the world or as an action camera.

EVERY TIME I've been thinking... An EPIC would have been the camera for all these purposes. I've could have jumped into the car and shot the handheld or locked shot from inside when doing the car commercial. Moved it around with easy access, just as if it was a DSLR. I could have traveled the world making a BEAUTIFUL commercial for one of the largest bank corporations in the world. Being able to grab shots on the run or shooting in places where you have to be "invisible" to be able to get authenticity. I could have thrown into our "cable rig" throwing it over roof tops or been holding it outside a 22 storey building with ease as we're "grabbing" action shots on roof tops. BUT mostly I could have slept soundly knowing it was exactly what was needed for my productions. A camera that fits all purposes, but shooting pristine 5K RAW instead of horrible mpeg hahaha

I want to congratulate Jim and RED for making the DSMC system - you're right on the money on that. It is exactly what's needed and there's no question why you now have such followers as Fincher, Jackson (yeahh yeahh I know they've been on the cool aid from the start. Although Jackson didn't do the final leap until now) and now Cameron :patriot: + so many more.

NOW!!!! I can't wait for my Epic's so I can feel like I did when I received my first RED ONE and we immediately took it to Cuba on build 15 - shooting anamorphic (as shooting on Cuba with a camera very few had worked with. Even more so... heard of at the time). I want to feel like the pioneer in the wild west again LOL. :gun:

BTW here's a link to a commercial we did with RED ONE and some DSLR - lets see if you can spot where the DSLR has been used (its not that many shots, but still what if they would have been EPIC :violin: lol). They're not that easy to spot, but you should be able to considering where the RED might have been to "clunky" for quick and easy access on a tight schedule :thumbup1:

EDIT: I want to say that it's mainly RED that was used it's just a few shoots of 5D integrated in this spot.

I'm sorry that it's a link to Youtube, but I don't have it to show anywhere else. Also, Danny did most of the stunts for real, no safety. It wasn't our (productions) choice, but he takes pride in his sport (parkour) and it was the conditions for making it. Amazing guy, very talented and we loved that we weren't exploiting it in the normal boring way, but more trying to keep a storyline (we had a lot of KYD from that shoot - some where because of the DSLR not matching though  LOL. Don't cheat and check the "making of" to spot where DSLR was used :smile5:

ABSOLUTELY. That was the overwhelming feeling I had when I first touched Epic: Wow, now I don't want to use any other DSLR... if there's anything worth shooting, it's worth getting an Epic for it. It could very well save you time and money if you have any kind of decent budget... and you get a better quality product and awesome stuff like high speed as a bonus.

It is like some kind of ultra DSLR from the future. Nothing wrong with using a Nikon D1 or Canon 30D. But it is tough after you just played with the 2011 models :)

Nice spot as usual, Fredrik!

Wow, what sort of health and safety assessments did you have to go through for this spot?

Great work. Yes, Epic will change things for all of us and we'll never look back.

Couldn't agree more. I have a 7D converted to use PL mount lens plus a sensor upgrade and have RED lens on the front. The pictures are quality but everytime I turn over I'm thinking this should be EPIC. I want to over crank, and then spend time seeing what the insane resolution can do. My have clients are asking when I will receive my camera but sadly I was a johnny come lately and am only now in a financial position to purchase an EPIC. I am so far down the food chain I've got fruit flies laughing at me.

Then you have to remember that my love is to film and it shouldn't matter if it's EPIC or an Iphone.

My day will come

As we like to say to kids here in France (well, to the educated ones...), don't say "I want" but "I would like" ;-)

Hi Fredrik,

I support you in your quest for an Epic. I'm sure you will put it to great use. We loved your Coffee Ad back in the early days. It was wonderful to be able to see it on the big screen! (35mm print) - Thank you! Love your new work. Well done!

Hey Fredrik,
I here you mate! on all levels, I've been starving for one. But I think now one is heading my way... THANK GOD!!!!!... thankyou RED, Thanks JIM.
One thing I do admit to all I meet though... If RED didn't make this amazing camera, we would be all still shooting film and or video... RED has seriously changed the world.. if not changed it, they have most certainly kicked it into another gear. I'm eternally grateful for that.
I still don't have one in my hot little hands, but when it does, I'll will most certainly feel guilty.

Regarding your Pakour TV ad.. Mate. its a bloody ripper!!!!!. I think yours is better than the one we just did.

We shot with RED ONEs all the way through. I have to say though that they didn't slow me down one little bit. (i doubt the EPIC would have speed up my day to much more if not at all. :), But it still would have been way cool to have one on set.

Hi Everybody,

Thanks for all the nice comments. Didn't expect that many. Hey there Bruce. It's been a long time. Hope to get to LA soon but it's been busy all over the world lately so no US this year so far. If I come around let's hook up for a drink or two.

Wow, what sort of health and safety assessments did you have to go through for this spot?

Great work. Yes, Epic will change things for all of us and we'll never look back.

I can tell you it was a bit of a nerve wreck for production and insurance was tough to get lol. There were a few episodes where I had to take charge and call everything on the walkies as production washed their hands :smile5:

i dont like this DSLR Killer word...Epic and DSLR??? how do you compare DSLR with red product even Red One kicks ass.(i own 7D)

Hahaha not sure if you read my thread or if you are ironic :thumbup1:. Im not comparing the two cameras at all. How could I? What I'm saying is that I'm looking forward to have a camera that brings me both worlds. The quick and easy and comfortable size that the canon can bring BUT with the muscles of RED RAW. That it's absolutely genius that they made the DSMC - it all makes sense when you've used DSLR as second bodies (for whatever reason) on a film shoot.

As we like to say to kids here in France (well, to the educated ones...), don't say "I want" but "I would like" ;-)

I'm truly sorry and apologise to everyone.... I would like an EPIC NOW!!! Please :aureola:

Hey there, thanks. Isn't it funny how beautiful it all looked on the big screen and how well it worked already back then. Still, there was this continuos persuasion with clients that you could make RED look absolutely amazing. It's funny that the RED camera is this under dog somehow and that incompetent people keep slagging it? I've never had any problems with our RED's (except for one spot on build 16 where we discovered that it couldn't take blue screen - a problem that was fixed very quickly by RED - all kudos for their hard work, determination and devotion.

Thanks Mark! Have to say it's BEAUTIFUL your spot. You keep on being a solid MF lol. Very nice work you seem to just have coming out of your.... :emote_popcorn:
Funny enough it was a Suzuki ad that I also would have loved to show but can't as it's not released .

Nice work. Says a lot about a camera that will be replaced by a camera costing 10 times as much (20 times currently).

I think you might misunderstand - it's mostly RED the spot, but yes you can make beautiful images out of a DSLR. BUT you will not have the same spectrum of possibilities as you would with a camera that will cost 10 times as much AND that camera will be more or less the same size. That's the point.

while on the topic of just small camera bodies, I was thinking over all the Epic and Scarlet models, and propose this and wonder if people think it's a good idea. Jump start the Scarlet S35 again, but the thing that would separate it from the Epic S would be it would be absolutely bare bones. Only shoots up to 29.97, no overcranking, and even a loss in modularity with just more built in components, all to get the price as low as possible, and importantly the body as small as possible. Like GH1 small, if that's even possible, shooting 3k, or 4k.

the idea would be a high resolution device for crash cams, multi cam, trick shots, etc. so you don't have to mount a 58k epic m on something that could potentially destroy your camera. That way your film, show, or project can be 4k future proofed without compromise to budget, or risking some of your most expensive gear. Sort of the idea tossed around with RED making something similar to a go pro. but slightly bigger, and still an professional tool, but the tool you have no issues with beating up.

good idea? bad idea?

Good idea. But unlikely. As you know, the "S" is already Red's effort to fulfill on the Scarlet 5k promise, and it's identical to "X" with some minor internal differences.
Your idea is awesome but it seems like it would take too much extra work -- and I think Red's time/resources is going into 1) getting production optimized and then 2) all
the other things on the horizon.

Anthony
