  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why film will stay the king...

BTW Peter - guns kill people AND people kill people more readily when they have access to guns.

Hehehe Joe - I have to bite... Canada has more rifles per person then USA and only fraction of the rifle-related crimes... :cheers2:

Back on topic...

It is rare to find a post I agree with so completely.

Bravo sir.

Ps. What are your thoughts on swap-able sensors/sensor compartments that have varying iso's, resolution etc etc and their fw built in....

THX.

My guess is that that is the future, but 1st when things have stabilized on a tech standard as it has in the audio world.
It will also take a lot of smart thinking, making those swaps as robust and non-destructive to camera and workflow as it is to change a lens.

Only one polarizing argument at a time guys! ;-) Today is analog vs. digital, Mac vs. PC was last week, there's room on the schedule tomorrow to talk about guns... politics after that... then maybe we go for broke and talk abortion!!

Moderator concurs...

hahaha, I like that one.

So the trailer, that's the one about football? Must be a changed link?

My grandpa was a air plane mechanic in the war. He saw jet engines come out and he said "they're just a fad, they'll never be as good a propeller". All new technology takes a while to get up to be the standard, but I assume some day in the future, film won't be used again, except in extreme circumstances, much like propeller airplanes today.

The immediacy of digital acquisition: what most of you so lightly brush off as "convenience": a means with which to respond to our own creative choices as we make them.
There has been no other medium in the history of art that has had such latency as film. We have learned to respond to that quite masterfully at times, but it is no longer a necessary thing,
let alone a desirable one - not any more than having a typewriter respond to your touch with a crude facsimile two days after the fact. There is not a movie in existence that might not have
benefited from the "convenience" that is a part of digital acquisition …. it is now up to the individual to decide how he or she prefers to work - it is no longer up to the medium.
There will be new masters of cinema.

Battistela, i love you my friend! You point the right question, "Highlights"! Alexa is the more "filmic" digital cinema camera thanks to its highlights (smoothness and color too), when you talk about dragon and say "All the magic of film, all the convenience of Digital", it just makes me impatient, i can't wait to see more footages, and better than that, i can't wait to get mine ..

I know it's pretty "TABOO" here but, have you already shoot with Alexa? How does it compare to Dragon in term of color and highlights?

"Fucking great storytelling tool", we run the same holy war my friend..

I own an Alexa and a Dragon. Dragon has tiny bit more D/R. About a half to full stop worth overall, tiny bit up top, tiny bit on the bottom... Will be writing about this soon. Set the Dragon to 2000 ISO and the distribution below and above grey evens up. Its almost too much D/R. My specific dragon is New OLPF, so i cant speak to which is cleaner yet, until the new calibration comes in. Using the Diamond bros camera, which has old OLPF, Dragon is FAR cleaner. By ALOT, but the clenliness mean the distribution of D/R is bottom heavy. Still has awesome highlights, but not as far as alexa. New OLPF might reverse that.

Very first thing i shot, when i turned my camera on.

The china light on the left of frame twin, 40w bulbs, is the main source of light in the room. This is the New OLPF @ 2000 ISO. There is a 10w LED china ball on the right of frame, visible in the window refelction, and a 40w Lamp in the corner behind the plants. Thats it. The plants measured a T2.8/4 split.

Just consider for a minute that the source of almost all the light in the room is exposed, while its illuminating, at key, a subject. Thats absurd.

Couldn't resist.

In 50 years, no one will care about the change from chemical to digital cinema... no one.
In 50 years, every digital camera on the market in 2014 will be a minor footnote in history. So what?

Look at it this way: historians do remember the revolutionary change between acoustic recording and electrical recording for sound, when film sound transitioned from optical to magnetic recording, and when sound went from analogue to digital. But in truth, it's only of interest to technical people and historians. Average people who just want entertainment don't care about the medium; it's all about the content.

I think the King have fallen but will be remembered as the kingpin of many years to come.

With no disrespect to the quality or legacy of film, but how many of you are still capturing audio with an analog recorder?

Don't take this the wrong way, Photochemical film is The King in the similar way as Elvis Presley. The Legend.

The point is moot ....
Nobody will be making film.
Nobody will be processing film.
In five years or less Film will simply not exist.
