  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why Epic Makes Me Happy!!

ProRes is cross platform. You can use ProRes in the new Avid Media Composer. I am sure that RED has cards up their sleeves that they've not yet revealed.

I hope and think that RED will release a Hardware Developers Kit for 3rd party companies to make modules for use with Epic and Scarlet and I'm sure that if Cineform wants to make a module, then they will. I for one will gladly take the Proxy Module as soon as it gets released.

It's only a matter of time once a HDK is out, that a KiPro from AJA will be made that fits inside an Epic module.

The basic brain weighs 5lbs. Jim was shooting with one hand held over his head. It depends what you attach to it. A lot in a small package.

Actually, less than 5 pounds with the EPIC Brain with CF-Module. it was truly incredible how light the EPIC configuration was. It was also amazing to get to record a bit in 5K, myself, as well.

I'm not so sure they can't do a PRORES modle for RED but I was really curious to hear H.264 after many posts about its "quality".

The thing is, it's not a "H.264 Module", rather it is a PROXY module with the implementation of H.264 to allow people to wirelessly take files and begin to edit the proxies. These will never be intended to be used for the final product.

Don't be surprised when they come out with a whole lot more...

Dont get me wrong here. I love the H-264 module for on set monitoring.
I will buy 3 I-pads und hand it out to the director (sometimes me), ad-agency, client or the 1. AC to pull focus from.
If it really works well wirelessly then its gonna be the super bomb.

As some of you said, there are a lot of producers who want to shoot RED and want to edit right away (not proxies) without the converting that goes along with it.
We live in 2010 now and people want to edit the real deal right out of the box like DV.
The Arri Alexa will do that. It will save producers a lot of time and nerves to be able to get Pro Res right out of the box.
That's the single biggest complaint I get from all over the industry that the RED workflow is to complicated for none RED Freaks like us.
Remember, RED was maybe intended for the moviemakers but is now used in all kinds of genres ( I can hear Gibby ; ) ). So people want the DV approach. Most people aren't used to the Film approach, they don't know how much easier it is for the film guys with RED.

But I'm pretty sure that Jim and the gang will have some stuff coming that will blow us away. Like the H-264 module. This thing will rock like crazy for on set monitoring.
But Pro Res or other codec module should better come sooner than later.
The big Arri lion is awake.

Im guessing a combination of prores in cf and h264 wirelessly requires heavy processing but I will agree it is a must.

As mentioned above, r3d post is not that straightforward, many companies still use old versions of avid, dont have a single fcp suite - let alone RedRocket, but still need their footage ready for editing a couple of hours after shooting.
I love the capabilities offered by raw when shooting features, but tv stuff is a different beast, and the benefits of a ready-to-import file with the metadata baked in outweight raw's flexibility.

Alexa will get a big piece of the pie thanks to prores. In my country(Greece) especially with the current economic situation nobody will afford to bring one, so companies will prefer to use cinealtas and the likes when film is not an option.

sadly enough, i guarantee that there are going to be a great deal of people out there who will be satisfied with just cutting the h264 proxies if the let's say, 1080p or 720p out of it looks decent enough, and finish just like that. It's a huge waste, but I have no doubt in my mind that's going to start happening. I've seen some people do half debayers and cut and finish just like that because it's much faster that way, and they consider it "good enough" for broadcast. Which accounts for a lot of the "so so" looking footage out there shot on RED.

hopefully the module will be used the way it's supposed to in most cases.

Tom,

RED can only make the tools and reccomend how to use them. I agree, I have heard of horendous workflows that go against everything that shooting RAW means, two years out and MAJOR post places still want to treat RED like an SR tape "because it's easier".

You can have an excellent idea, but you can not control stupidity.
