  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why Did Canon...?

Something noone has really mentioned yet...

The build quality on the Scarlet/Epic is FAR beyond the build of the C300, F3, or really any camera sub 20k.

I LOVE my F3, but its literally falling apart. In a bad way. I dont think it will last 2 more years.

My friends REDmX looks as good as the day it was bought, 3 years ago, but has been through 10 features. My F3 has been though only 1. The C300 looks to be similar build to the F3, plastic over a alloy inner cage.

good points, the c300 is still 8bit 50Mbits to create a 1080p image, the Scarlet X uses 50*MB to create up to a 5k image . Canon’s C300 uses an 8MP sensor with a total resolution of 3840x2160 (4K HD). Scarlet uses a 14MP sensor with a total resolution 5120x2700 (5K) on a larger sensor. One uses the MPEG compression and one is RAW, One has 13.5 stops and up to 18 with HDRX and the other???

I've used many camera's in my life and that includes canon, but on this subject they really missed the whole damn point.

I think with so much content on the web, its like a double edged sword because yeah more people get exposure but most stuff looks good on a computer screen. Every feature I've seen at a theater shot on red has blown my mind, "that was shot on a digital camera?!" I think to myself. Man how far digital has come in such a short amount of time...

i watched several features including contagion, not for one second did i think "hey that didn't look like 35mm" and i watched lots of those over 15 years.

I can't understand why they did the C300...who will buy this at that price ? At 4 000 $,5 000 $ it'd be interesting, but 20k$, come on ! The C300 doesn't even auto focus with their own Canon AF lenses, but the Scarlet does it !!

Canon 4K DSLR or similar camera is still a sort of blah blah blah or with another words in very early stage of development.

Maybe Canon imaging processor DIGIC DV VIII or generation eight could bring that fast sensor data read out without any heat to CF cards???!!!

Actually Canon is more or less interested in IQ and they will stay in HD as long as possible.

C300 is a real treat to F3 and Alexa just because of higher ISO sensitivity than any Super 35-size sensor camera at any price category...!!!

The Canon 4K DSLR just obsoleted both the 1Dx and C300. Not sure why they would announce that camera now.

Jim

I was wondering the same thing. WTF! Why didn't they just release what I am sure they are capable of. A 4K small form factor camera. Even if it didn't shoot raw it would be a nice step in the right direction. Do you think they will come around any time soon? For that matter with any of the other cam companies. The f65 is pretty sweet, but man that thing is huge:) Especially when compared to the epic.

It's obvious from their specs and prices for the c300 that they do not want to shoot themselves in the foot and step on their lower priced models, imagine they came out with sub 10k cine camera, that would probably destroy most of their HD prosumer cameras

The fact of the matter is it's irrelevant whether Epic,Scarlet or the F65 is better or worse than the C300. What I do know is people, production companies or broadcast companies will pick what they think is the best camera for the job. The C300 is never going to compete with Scarlet/Epic as a choice of camera on a feature. However Scarlet/Epic is never going to be the first choice to a one man cameraman in the middle of a war zone who has to shoot, download, edit and send back over a sat phone to his/her station? I just don't get here the trashing of other cameras? Canon, make no mistake about it will sell a bucket load of these cameras - I hear the BBC are really excited and have already signed it off. I don't see Alexa at 2K struggling to find features?

What I do know is everyone is still missing a trick here. I don't know how big the market is in terms of selling cameras, like Epic, to film makers/production companies etc. I think at it's price point it is probably a decent size as against 35mm film cameras. I was reading somewhere that Arri only made about 2000 '435' cameras? But I would think we would all agree that this market is way less than the stills photographer one. As a stills fashion/beauty guy I know just how much change is going on in my industry at the moment. Clients are putting their toes in the water and are desperate for the technology to shoot a movie where they just pull all the stills from that footage. At the moment there is only one camera in the world that you can do that on EPIC! I need to be able to shoot 96fps at 5k to get really usable stills from motion. Not even Scarlet can do that. That's where Canon and every other manufacturer are really missing the trick.

For the stills guys embracing motion we have two options. Like me waiting for a Stage 4 Epic or you buy something like the C300 because it's simple, decent image (well better than your 5D!), small, uses the same lenses but above all has incredibly good low light performance and still continue to use your 5D for the stills. For stills photographers probably shooting with only one or two assistants low light performance is essential because we don't either have the man power or the budgets for huge lighting set ups.

While the Epic is fantastic I still see flaws there that could be way improved upon to really open this market. Probably it will be RED before anyone else does but who knows. I do know whoever cracks it will walk away with a huge market - so here is my ideal DSMC camera

1. 5k FF sensor
2. RAW
3. Revolving back just like the old Fuji 680 and Mamiya RB 6x7 to shoot either landscape or portrait without turning the camera on it's side.
4. 96fps FF 5K or faster
5. Sub $40,000
6. Full flash sync for single frame in the studio
7. Shutter release for single frame
8. Incredible low light performance

Ignoring the money side I truly hope RED will ultimately produce a camera a DSMC camera that has all these features! Funny thing was that when I first saw the C300 at Canon's launch and given it had the EOS brand I thought they had done it - what a let down! Well thats my Christmas list!

I think they teased the 4K DSLR "cinema" cameras "in progress" because the C300 was obsolete as soon as the Scarlet was announced and they got worried...

The C300 was obsolete last march when the F3 started shipping, 10bit 444 out, then later sLog. I mean who the hell is going to use 8bit Long GOP LOG images in todays market place???? That's crazy, what is this 2005?. Goes against the whole point of log workflow.

Please remember the 1DX is a still camera, their flagship still camera. A videocentric DSLR will have little effect on 1DX sales and will certainly not make it obsolete. Love or Hate Canon.... the 1DX is a killer still image camera.

I honestly think that the FS100 already sort takes the wind out of the C300's sales. The FS100 is absolutely wicked in low light and it is 5 grand. I'm not saying it's as good as the C300... but is the C300 really four times better? I really doubt it. Maybe if you're deeply invested in Canon glass and Canon has you by the brass... I don't get it. Bwah.

It's possible that Canon set a trap, maybe they know Jim likes to talk it up and they wanted to know where he was at. Now Canon could hit the sweet spot and start marketing to all the disgruntled former scarleteers and indie folk that waited for years to find out it was not going to happen.
I reckon Canon have a few tricks up their sleeve and most likely will target the $6k crew in the very near future

I think $10k, even $12k, and it would be a huge hit.... 12+ stops DR, amazing low light, internal, broadcast standard 4:2:2 codec, great ergonomics, 2 x XLR, great swivel screen, ND filters, great highlight rolloff, 1000+ lines rez, amazing colour representation (overlooked by the spec crazy people on forums) .... shoot all day with a couple of batteries and CF cards.

It's a great camera with a slightly high price (I expect it to hit the streets at under $15k). If it hits under $13k, i'll be interested. 1080p is fine for alot of work we do and it will complement our Scarlet well.

The EPIC and SCARLET are better cameras from end to end and actually work with Canon lenses better than CANON!! If you are looking to shoot in the dark and have an ok image and are willing to spend the money on the c300 for that reason then go for it..

Oh and they (Epic and Scarlet) are upgradable (free)
Available now (in a RED backorder sort of available)

I still shoot a lot with my 5D and don't understand why Canon didn't come out with something affordable..

I saw noisy videos in low light conditions from the C300. I'll wait to see the final product...
