  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WHY!!!! are people still using color baked DPX's F&%*@#%*#K!

David, I saw no detail difference between beta 6 and beta 10.
They are both soft. ( looks like a 0.5 blur on the image )

Yes, the images I show are 1:1 crops.
I hope they have time to address this in the upcoming RCX release that was just announced yesterday.

Janne: yours look different also, but not as much. Also, this difference is dependent on how sharp the r3d is to start with. lens and motion blur are factors.
If this is Mac, maybe there are slight platform differences?

That's good, now RED should allow the less complex ( maybe faster too ) debayer method to run in software as well, giving the user a choice!

( I think this topic should have it's own thread )

Jean - there is no sharpening in Rocket, and that's fine because we don't recommend you sharpen until the end, with respect to the desired output format.

So is my impression right, that most users don't care to see the extra detail revealed in the non processed stills I posted ?

When I submit my camera to a well known still camera review site, and they use the software debayer, it will be interesting to see the technical review.

I will be posting some r3d images that are debayered with alternate algorithms soon.
If you want something done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself.

( I'll start a new thread for this topic, it has little to do with the original title now. )

RED had never sharpened in camera, preferring to let the user sharpen to taste. As a last pass I sometimes add sharpening depending on the job, but I'd rather sharpen than soften images.

But that's just me.

Images from DSLRs with flash are always going to be tack sharp.

I can't get the detail back with sharpening, is the problem.
( if you take an image and blur it , then try to sharpen it back to where it was, you will not get everything back )
Over done sharpening ( or coring , a telecine term ) can make the image 'pop' more visually, but it's fake.
Good enough for shopping mall viewing, on the TV sets in the store, but not the real deal.

None of this matters for the 1920x1080 people. Scaling from 4k to 2k masks the problem 100%. Maybe this is why it's not a high priority item today.

NOTE : I started new thread for this topic. Thanks!

Just to weigh in: I've seen some examples where the more 'crude' debayer of the Rocket results in aliasing around high-frequency detail. So in many cases the people I know do final debayer in software...

I dont usually deliver full 4k/5k to my cutomers, most 1080. This is how the image quality look when i full res for me.
I'm using beta 6 and red rocket. I think the software image is better. The closeups are 200%.

In 1080 both rocket and software are identical.

Thank you Janne! I've heard about the differences between the two... but never quite got a visual example of the differences. Your example says it all. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
