Have a massive problem (I think).

During the log and transfer process I renamed every 'name' of the clip and fcp increments duplicate clips by one.

We have started to think about our online process and got quite stuck.

We are off lining with ProRez (HQ) 4:2:2 and want to conform to the original R3D's then grade them then export to some 2k format (probably ProRez 2k 4:4:4, once we upgrade) so we can start compositing with Shake.

Our final output will be 2k digital cinema format.

Back to my query, we have been checking out 'Clipfinder', 'Rubber Monkey' and 'Crimson' but cant quite conform our ProRez stuff into the original R3D's. Is this because we renamed the 'Name' of each clip as it went into FCP?

Urgent help required.

I think you might be SOL on this one. In the future it might be wise to keep the clip name in tact and use some other field in FCP for what ever name you wanted to use.

You could then have hidden the clip name column to not see the number of the clip.

Is there a chance that the name resides on the clip media (the quicktime file itself) If so, then you could use the reveal in finder command in FCP and copy paste the name from the file back into the FCP file.

Otherwise I really think it's going to be a long arduous manual job to get this done.

Sorry to hear about this.

David

Cheers for your quick reply David,

Doomed... We have not changed the reel number so we can check the clapper board and manually change each clip name.

I so wish this was a short film... Sucks to be me!

Cheers

I worked on a project where the less than brilliant editor renamed all the clips. The files are re linkable - however some nice fellow in the EU wrote us some custom code to link everything back up. I'll see if I can did up the info.

You didnt rename the files on the disk did you? You can rename clips in FCP but cant change file names on the disk. If you only changed 'clip' names in FCP you should be able to Online normally, because they reference directly to the Pro res file with the correct name on the Disk.

Cheers all,

Still currently working on the problem, tiz quite annoying.

Because we changed the names during the Log and Transfer process all the 'Clip Names' and prorez .mov have the same name. (e.g. 'My Amazing Explosion.mov' and 'Scene Explosion -> My Amazing Explosion')

I wish there was an amazing explosion in the film...

We believe we can change all the names in FCP back to the R3D file names the do the whole Media Manage thing.

(We have not changed any of the R3D files... we aint that stupid)

Nightmare.

We took a look at the XML file (I'm a web designer by trade and under stood it pretty easily (trying to program a RSS feed, thats hard)) and there was nothing regarding a path to the original R3D's or an original R3D name.

We never changed the Reel number at all but as expected it only supplies the reel number, so we can find the folder where the clip is and by looking at the time code or the clapper board we can copy the original R3D file name and change the clip name in FCP.

Its quite frustrating to think that red never state the workflows like this one require not to change the clip name during L&T ingest. (A big flashing banner would be helpful.)

Thanks for your help

I don't think it is a Red "thing" to warn you. If anything it should be a FCP function to warn or at least ask with an explanation whether OK to change on LT. As this relates to solid state offline/online work flow not format specific work flow issue.

Stretch your fingers and get the coffee going sounds like you have a few long nights and days a head... sorry couldn't be of much help.

I had an editor edited everything from proxies and he renamed every clip in the timeline to match the scene and cut names but it was no problem conforming that with Clipfinder.

From the FCP Red Whitepaper that is helpfully included with the RED FCP installer (not that anyone seems to read it), part of the section on maintaining data on import:

• The name of each R3D file is used to create the universally unique ID number (UUID)
(also referred to as the Clip ID) for each ingested clip. This ID number, which is not
user-accessible, is used to track the correspondence between ingested clips and the
original source media from which they came. This means you can rename clips in the
Log and Transfer window as you ingest them, or afterward in the Browser, without
losing the correspondence between a clipʼs UUID tag and the name of the original
R3D file. For this reason, do not, under any circumstances, rename the R3D filenames
of your archived media.

I hope this saves you a lot of time and effort.

That's because it's not Red's job to teach you basic assistant editing or data management.

You put the shots in folders ("bins") in the FCP browser window and name the bins whatever you want - usually by what the slate says so they correspond with the script notes they made on set.

You give the sequences you sync with, and the sunk-up master clips you make from those sequences, the same name as the R3D they come from.

That way they link back up to the R3D's.

This applies to any project no matter what it's shot on or what you're editing with.

So when logging transcoded QTs, I can change the name of the clips in the bin and still eventually re-link to the H proxies for grading in Color? Or would I have to restore the original clip names before sending exporting the XML to conform through Clipfinder?

That's not necessarily true. An NLE should let you change the clip name to something that is meaningful to the editor - and some do. It seems that the filename is stored elsewhere according to some posts here. Can this be confirmed or not?

I think the issue here is the difference between changing the *clip* name, and changing the *file* name.

If you name the clip during L&T, it changes the *file* name, and while you're not totally screwed, you're setting yourself up for headaches during conform.

If you rename the clip after L&T, when it's sitting in your bin, all you're changing is the *clip* name, inside FCP. No issues with conforming there, I do it all the time.
