  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who makes the Red Lenses?

They showed up under a new brand - it seems - quite recently. As RED has gone on to make the 17-50 Pro Zoom...

There is something seriously wrong with that product listing. Jarred and Jim have said that there is no connection and that RED has nothing to do with that. And they have no idea who this DigiOptical, or whoever, is. It was discussed on here a while back.

I highly doubt that listing is legit, in any way. Just look at the shipping costs.

Ah...

I saw thediscussion. Not J & JJ's comments.

From the looks and specs, it seems slightly familiar to something I've seen before. Even has an i-data.

Anyhow.
Not important.

RED approves of the RED lens design and glass.
Even design it, for all I know.

Bottom line is that @ the price, there's no comparable quality lenses out there to the pro series RED.

This is dumb. It's like saying Apple doesn't make the iPhone.

Which is true. Apple products are not made by Apple. Nor are Nike products made by Nike. And in the days of globalized mass production, it is of important relevance.

"Designed by" is not the same as "Made by".

Would you still buy a Ferrari if it was only designed by Ferrari, but made by GM or Ford?

Clearly it's not enough for some folks to say that they are getting an exceptional value from Red, they would rather be able to say that they are getting a steal on a set of Cookes in Red clothing. Maybe it makes them feel smarter than the next guy.

I would not buy a Ferrari made by Ford, but if Ford came out with a new muscle car that had Ferrari like performance at a fraction of the cost, I might buy the Ford.

hhm? yes

what do wish, that jim and jarred glue together lenses in the RED Garage?..hehe

That would be interesting. I guess Graeme and Ted would have to work hard polishing the glass.

Of course, it is impractical for Red to build out a production facility to produce their own optics, and compete at the price point they do.

Clearly they have gone the route of designing a top notch product, and using a 3rd party manufacturer with existing production facilities and product lines to manufacture the lenses.

you are porbably correct, and thats totally cool for me.
the RPPs are the best bang for the buck lenses right now.

And wait till the word gets out that the pixels on the sensor are put on by hand by my kids using a microscope and tweezers, working all hours in my basement workshop.

What kind of wages are you paying them? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? 30 minute Spongebob breaks every 10-12 hrs? Don't let the union fellas catch a whiff of your operation, or you may start getting calls about getting "organized"...

I think we all had the feeling. As long as they're short with pointy ears, we wont judge you.

Not that I actually CARE who or where the RPPs are made, since they're awesome either way. I'm actually curious why that wouldn't be public information? To protect against competition? Just a privacy concern? That's what confuses me the most. Why does it matter? We all know Foxconn makes iPhones. Who cares?

This question seems to come up every four to six months here on REDuser.

I know who manufactured the old RED zooms. It is not Cooke.

I know who manufacturers the RPPs and the 18-85. The company is located in Japan, as is stated on the box. This company certainly has the technical capabilities to make nice lenses.

RED chooses not to state who does their subcontract work on any of their product, which is their right. I'm not going to be rude and do otherwise.

And yeah, it doesn't matter.

At around $30-70 or so isn't that in the normal ballpark for shipping internally within the US?

As they no doubt do for the sensor wafer too.

Yes, ultimately it's the quality and performance of a lens that matters. But we know that when Nikon or Canon users can choose from either OEM or less costly third party....lets just say Sigma, for example......glass, the majority of pro's choose the former. Perceived quality matters, which is why brand image is so important.

RED no doubt hopes that, as long as their products deliver in quality and performance terms, RED Pro lenses will develop their own positive reputation.

Companies don't make things, people do. Whether those people are employees of the primary brand, employees of a subsidiary, employees of a dedicated subcontractor or employees of a third party, what matters most is the design, materials specifications, manufacturing specifications, quality control requirements, testing and verification of the above. Great brands are trustworthy because they manage those control points externally as well as they do internally.

My best guess at who makes the RPP's would be Cosina.

On a other note I know the machine shop who use to manufacture many of the Dalsa lenses, one day I'll buy a set of custom primes ;)

Jason, you beat me to it. I think that the Ford GT is the best looking car on the planet at any price and from any manufacturer. I haven't actually driven it or the competition from Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini so I can't compare build quality... but I want that Ford GT in black with no racing stripe.

If I sell a couple screenplays or get a TV gig - that is about the only spoil myself purchase I really see myself making.

Sadly, back down in the less rarified air that I actually breath, Ford doesn't make anything to compare to the Dodge Challenger or Chevy Camaro. Sorry Ford fans but the Mustang looks... bland next to those two. The Challenger gets the nod for looks but the Camaro takes the lead with performance.

What's that? Lenses? We were talking about lenses?
