im not saying what i did is right for everyone. i can only speak for myself. but a film degree isn't a guarantee of any sort of success. kubrick, tarantino, and p.t. anderson all decided not to go to film school. coppola, spielberg, and scorcese all did. they all made the right decisions for themselves. in an industry as difficult to succeed in as ours, all you can do is try to do what you think is right in your own life and career.

i didn't mean to insult anyone. andrew i wish you the best of luck getting into the grad program. i have two very good friends that are in it and find it very rewarding. but what is right for them isn't necessarily what is right for me. for what it's worth, we have a few interns that work on our productions as pa's that just graduated from usc. who knows, maybe my company won't do well in the long run. we are still very new and that is a very real possibility. all i know is that where i am right now is where i had hoped to be a year or two after graduating. and i am very excited about that.

Believe me, I would love to be in your position, my parents did not want me to go all film right out of high school and wanted me to get a general undergrad degree and go masters at USC, NYU or AFI. I love my school but would love to be in film school at the moment, not three or four years from now, assuming I get in or can afford it. Masters programs for film, especially from the top schools are very very very difficult to get in to. You almost need to be working in the industry already in some capacity to get in.

Sorry my post came off as a little rude. Stressful week and I sometimes come online to vent. I'm from Cali so I hope to be back home in a few years. I'm 20 as well, great to see so many young people on this sight.

no problem andrew. let me know when you apply to the grad program. the guys i know that got in took a usc summer film class the year before they applied (anyone can take these classes, there's no acceptance process). some of the grad professors teach these classes, and they wrote letters of rec for my two friends. from what i understand this is a huge way to set yourself apart.

oops, my friend chris was still signed in. he's also a young red owner at 24. although i think he's gonna sell his and partner up with our company if anyone is interested in his camera

and for what it's worth, students in the graduate program are able to shoot on any camera they choose if i am not mistaken

thanks for the advice.

when i could turn back the time, i would say i wish i did dhoot more without thinking about it.
and when i would go to filmschool i would learn to produce, the part to get the movie done is easier then selling the flick when you dont know someone who does the aqquisition at a dsitributor.

I've been considering taking out a loan for a RED, but being in school right now that would probably be a stupid move. Especially since this is Toronto and RED owner/operators are about as rare as people walking on the street.

as far as not being able to use the red outside of class, it was a question of permits. the film school asked the usc campus public safety officers to be absolute in their enforcement of permits as a teaching tool for student productions. if you don't have a permit, you will get shut down immediately. on the permit application, you have to list the camera you're using. and you can't get a permit if your application says Red on it. i even appealed to the head of physical production, asking if i could get special permission because i had been given the trustee scholarship. no dice. once after that, i tried to convince some campus officers that the red was an ex3. but this is la, and when it comes to cameras, no one is clueless.

i tried to do a production away from campus. but as a student filmmaker, all of the collaborators i knew to work with were other students. and because school kept them so busy, there wasn't enough time to get a crew together for an outside project unless it was close to where they all live. and nobody i knew lived away from campus.

so to meet other people in la that i could work with, i had to work on as many productions around the city as i could. thats how i met all of my partners. there wouldn't have been time to do this if i had still been in school.

luckily a lot of my friends are still in college, so i still get to hang out with college girls while i'm 20

Hahahaha, I'm sorry but not letting you get a permit because RED was listed on it? I find that extremely hard to believe... Borderline troll material - USC WANTS NOTHING MORE THAN FOR YOU TO BE A SUCCESS. They foster creativity outside of the classroom. I made dozens of short films while I was there, outside of class, and never once did I get into any trouble - And as far as DPS knowing the difference between a Red camera and an EX3, that's just outright laughable. Those turtlebrains wouldn't know a hole in the ground if you showed it to them - I find the excuse of leaving the best university in the world for film because they wouldn't let you use Red outside of class flammable, slanderous & insulting to alumni like myself - There are other reasons why you left USC but you're not telling us and that's fine but don't make stuff up to hurt the Trojan image - They gave you a full ride, something millions of kids dream about everyday, and you threw it to the sidelines because you thought you were better than 99% of your colleagues. You should start your own film school

wow - let's make it personal, why don't we. Go Trojans. Long live the University of Spoiled Children, eh? :chillpill:

I'm sorry if I'm passionate - I don't like it when people give out bad info - Not allowing students to shoot on a Red camera outside of their curriculum is nonsense - Maybe another school does that but not USC - And who's calling who spoiled here?

My school does that, but that's mainly because most of the people in my program are just out of high school and the RED would get broken insanely fast. In order to shoot RED for our projects we ahve to:

1) Have a trained and tested DOP/Operator
2) Have a RED trained camera team
3) have somewhat well known actors in the film (not hollywood stars or anything, but Toronto actors who are generally fairly well known within the industry

Would take a lot to break a RED ONE. It is built like a tank.

putting a DTap wrong onto the batteryplate would burn the boards, no fuses.
trying to force the batterycable into the drive connector wouldnt be healthy too.
breaking the Bents on the Cf Module by pushing too hard.
joystick is vulnerable.

did happen to some i guess, but one has to be really unexperienced to do so.

Passion is great. Rude is not. Who knows if his info is "bad?" He told his story. Why not take it at face value? He probably doesn't need me to defend him but he is 20 and he's made his own decision for his own reasons. Only time will tell whether it was "right" or "wrong" but it seems to me like he is willing to own it. It seems as if he has the passion to go after what he wants. I think he should be respected not ridiculed.

Ignorance is even worse
