  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who is RED?

I see where you're coming from David, but I have to imagine all Jim is getting at here is that this stuff does cost them something, and to put on the market what they believe in - the product that fits THEIR vision as a company, then the cost just may not be able to be what it was. What they're doing IS a business, but they're still providing an amazing tool for a wide user group that would otherwise not be able to attain a camera such as these... including the 2/3 Scarlet.

Even if Scarlet was $10k for what was originally to be $3k, it's still measures beyond anything in that price range. Multitudes. We can all agree to that. Unfortunately, it means some people who were saving have to save longer, or can't buy in - but it's putting in an attainable range what, just over three years ago, many here would never have considering being attainable in the short term, or possibly ever.

I'm sure I don't need to convince you (or that my words wouldn't be the ones to do it)... just felt like sharing, I guess. :)

So 1000$ extra will be for the 2/3 scarlet ?
S35 scarlet will require additional components so we're talking much more than 1000$ extra, right ?

How about Red network abroad ? Does Europe get to keep only London facility ? Will we be able to order from those delocalized centers ?

I think by "Red is pro", Jim also meant everything related to professional tools : maintenance costs, etc. And i know a lot of people around me that never think about this when they consider buying scarlets. I just hope there will be an easier way to get our future Red camera fixed in case of any issue...

Last but not least : pro vs prosumer... Yes, right... but with its size and weight, Red new cameras will change something in that professional world : yes the director will be able to fly away with the camera if he feels so, to capture unexpected and magical moments professional films miss at 99% (because of heavy equipments, heavy production rules, heavy teams, etc). So let's hope Red, while keeping high quality ambitions, will somehow allow filmakers to find again the liberty they got with DV 15 years ago.

I think if Jim will write ony day here: "That's all. The Apocalypse will be tomorrow!".
Most of people here will write: "Awesome! Amazing! Congratulation! Cool! I am impressed!, Best news I've heard today".:))) There are a lot of problems in the nearest future for us RED's waiters - price, date! Why are you so happy?:))

I'm very glad to see this!

I wonder what sort of price increase for Scarlet this entails.

I believe the difference is just $1000 for the 2/3" brain or 2/3" fixed. I say "just" because I can afford that, but it may make a difference to some people.

Threshold for me to rent vs buy is over $10K. Probably the same for a lot of camera people.

Trying to relax

Trying to relax

I too understand (and hope) this is largely a response to the people upset about a $1000 increase on Scarlet to add HDRx. I'm sure there are people digging up the "soccer mom" quote that won't die. It never was really going to be a camera for soccer moms, and I hope you're just addressing that. Is that correct?

I sincerely hope this is not the precursor for a large price increase. I will understand if it turns out the cameras just can't be made at the target price, though I will be extremely disappointed if Scarlet creeps up to something I can't afford. I voted for the inclusion of HDRx, but I sympathize with the people who feel it's already out of reach. Please, for our sake, leave out enough of what could have been included to keep the price close to what we've been saving for. For myself and countless other aspiring professionals, Scarlet holds out the hope of an entry point into the professional world. Fortunately, "Relax" seems to indicate we have nothing to fear.

As an aside, there's been a sentiment floating around that bothers me. The reaction, "good, they should raise the price just to keep it professional," puzzles me. Call me cynical, but it's hard to see any reasoning behind that besides a desire to keep the cost of entry high to discourage competing professionals. I say let your technique, your experience, and your artistry separate you, not the amount you paid for your gear.

No large price increase other than what was stated. If we add boards and ASICs, it will cost more. The only reason we would do that is for EasyHDR and HDRx. That would only be for Scarlet 2/3", 2/3" Fixed and Scarlet S35.

Great to hear. There are a lot of us breathing a little easier. Sorry we're such a touchy bunch! :wink5:

It amazes me how much people read into this stuff. We'll tell you what's going on. You don't need to guess.

Jim

Some day when I will get my RED camera in my hand I will reread all the post here from RECON for 2 last years, every day here, and will drink wine and cry from How hard was to get this RED camera!:)))

Amazingly, people around the internet are (mis)interpreting this as "Scarlet is now dead" (A DVXUser News thread says "Scarlet officially dead"), "Scarlet is now $10k" and such and such. Perhaps a clarification / addendum to the OP is in order.

Funny but true I guess.

Jim, have you considered doing video announcements on RECON? I think so much more accuracy would be conveyed.

I see where you're coming from David . . .

Pierce, I am a technical, artistic, social and moral perfectionist.
As I wrote, I love the "for pros only" attitude.

I have almost always spent more on visual, audio etc equipment than I could afford.

My moral and social perfectionism where always hard to combine with business.
I even refrained from huge amounts of money just to avoid having to do something I could not justify at that time.
I need to change that.

If you think you know where I am coming from, you are welcome to read these few lines that I just put on a page because it does not belong to discussions about RED.
http://gfilm.net/where_i_come_from.html

So I was just thinking out loud here about the balance between pro-art and business and where RED or better Jim sees himself on that scale.

Scarlet left the "soccermom" stage alog time ago. Personal this it not news but a clarification of what Red is. I think that we should still mention that red brings the best cameras, with the highest resolution, highest dynamic range at the best prices.

makes total sense.

I am amongst those who loved the capacity to get into RED for cheap, and it really hasn|t burned me or my customers, but I see a lot who it has burned, and thus not een a good thing for the RED name.

I am ambigious to this, but as long as it is all happening under the same name, pro glass, pro cameras and pro accessories is the way to make people happy with RED over time...

Then you didn't want the newest inventions and latest technology?

Jim

No, I was one of them who would be more than satisfied without HDRx. I know it's great and a useful tool. But Scarlet would have been professional without it, like the RED ONE is.

I'd like an entry level camera from RED. 6000$ is quite a lot for a lot of us. I'm nor earning my money with shooting movies. I make movies out of love for that medium. I wouldn't call it art (I respect artists too much). But it's passioned. That is why I still would like to shoot RAW and 3k. I'm certainly part of a minority on REDUSER, I quite understand that.

Would I always like the best of the best? Sure! Can I afford it? No!
