  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who is RED?

Exactly what I wanted to hear all along. What Jim & Red have just decided comes
with great responsibilities for their gears, and I'm willing to pay extra
for gears in better quality.

As Jim has stated several times before, Red didn't know what they were doing
when they developed Red One. And for the prices, I could understand when
I saw imperfections with Red One, more for its accessories.. Okay I couldn't,
but I had to.

What Jim has just stated is such a great news and tells his confidence about
what he is doing. Red has been good, and it's time to be great.. for pro's.

I look forward to it.

As a stage 2 REDhead in line for an Epic X package, I am very happy with that package's cost benefit differential vs a similarly equipped S35 Scarlet.

Going forward however, when looking at another body at full price I would more than likely opt for the S35 Scarlet instead of another S35 EPIC. I wonder how many would make that same decision? In other words, given the cost differential is there enough daylight between the two systems?

So I get the feeling that this means further price increases for the Scarlet. Correct?

The whole statement sounds as if you're gearing up for price increases across the board.

Pretty good news.

Also that means professional hardware and software with professional prices.

Not bad at all.

RED should also work to add ProRes 422/4444 module and maybe buy STORM

from The Foundry to have a decent app for on-set and post just to catch up with competition.

A professional will pay always extra for whatever that works and makes life on set and in post easy and safe.

It's about to add those two puzzles (ProRes recording and decent on-set/post app)

and then finally get the whole picture (new set of RED made cameras Epic/Scarlet,etc,...) at really professional way.

I think that has always been the case. More to point it is about 'quality matters' not price.
Red may do the best they can with price but not at the expense of a lesser camera. This unfortunately does imply no non-HDRx scarlets and no price cuts.

WTG Jim & the Red team!

I got reamed a bit by suggesting that Scarlet should not be too cheap. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38178&highlight=scarlet+happy

People have to be willing to pay for quality.

There are numerous other reasons why Red is not geared to compete in the scoccer mom market. I'm glad Red is realizing who they are (and aren't).

The big difference between the two is processing power inside the camera. That means frame rates and REDCODE capabilities. EPIC has every capability. Scarlet does not. EPIC has all the "hard stuff".

We have to look at S35 pricing since we are adding capability (HDRx™).

Jim

Very interesting, thanks for that response Jim.
If the pricing gap narrows between the two brains, the EPIC choice becomes more clear.

... and quite possibly the acquisition of a high profile url. Late 2005 according to internet archives

I have never seen RED as anything less than professional, but it is nice that it is a public statement now. There was a lot of complaining going on the last few days, when it should have been excitement. HDRx on the Scarlet!!!!! You are making the pros happy! Thank you for all your work RED team! Can't wait til your new PRO cameras come out.

Amazingly, people around the internet are (mis)interpreting this as "Scarlet is now dead" (A DVXUser News thread says "Scarlet officially dead"), "Scarlet is now $10k" and such and such. Perhaps a clarification / addendum to the OP is in order.

Guys, we can only speculate on what this means for pricing
and delivery dates ... but those details have always been fluid
anyway. So why try?

I believe Jim's point was to clarify the real customer Red is
catering to, and differentiating themselves from competitors
who put the bulk of their development in the "prosumer" category.

Specifically, for those freaking out about price ... yes, this
probably means the Scarlet will never compete with the 5D or 7D
on price. It's just not possible now or in the forseeable future, and
Red would kill themselves (and potentially alienate their core
group of customers) by trying to go in this direction.

The beauty of Jim is saying is that -- even if the term "professionals"
seems narrow at first glance ... Red's pricing and product line
will accessible to such a wide variety of serious professionals.

Whether's it's the film student who only has $10,000 to spend
while starting his career ... to the seasoned filmmaker who can
spend half a million dollars on Epic bodies, lenses, etc ... Red
can meet both their needs -- and better than anyone else.

That is the point -- dedication to true professionals of all types
who are willing to invest in themselves, and want the most
powerful camera their budget can afford. Whatever that may be!

Can you say histrionic?

Jim

. . . we cater to the professional market. That's it. A pro camera company.

That is great!

I love it!

I have just one concern:
Looking at history, art always needed protection from the business and political "bullies".
The art of motion picture seems to have gone a similar way, i. e. "the more money you can put into a production, the more impressive 'art' you get". We all know that this is not true.

So if RED would increase the prices significantly, I would think RED wants to shift to supporting the motion picture business not so much the art of motion picture.

Selling RED products too cheap on the other hand would allow everyone to PLAY with pro-level equipment, which I would consider almost as bad as the "pro-level for the rich only" situation.

I love the "for pros only" direction, but please, do not get too close to "for the rich only".

This is very true. Some of the most visionary filmmakers today work with limited budgets. And what about experimental and non-commercial filmmakers? Surely they are as, if not more, devoted than mainstream commercial filmmakers, but clearly, they don't have the budgets. Perhaps they are amateurs, by definition, as they make films because they are compelled to, not because they want to sell it to an audience. A professional camera at prosumer prices is exactly what they need. But that is a matter of semantics, I suppose.

"Soccer moms" or hobbyists is an entirely different thing.
