  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Who approves these accessory designs....?

I suppose this is just a rant, but hopefully someone reads this and actually tests this stuff before the next generation of gear or there a 3rd party manufacturer who can solve these issues with more functional gear.

Just got my evf and im pretty torn about it. optically its a big improvement over the old oled evf. image also just generally feels more accurate and consistent with what i see on the touch.

However, I dont really understand who let this thing out the door design wise. the placement of the lemo connection is pretty much the worst possible place. it makes it nearly impossible to use with any useful evf mount. our best option on epic was something like http://woodencamera.com/RED/EVF-Mounts-RED/UVF-v2-Sled.html but its impossible to actually attach the red mount in any useful way to it. The only real options are flipping the monitor upside down so that the lemo protrudes from the left side, or mounting the evf upside down on the sled which throws off the weight and doesnt let you position the evf into a a good handheld position. The port really should have been on the back like it was on the last evf, or possibly on the bottom like it is with the alexa/amira. I doubt anyone ever said "hey i wish it was on the side," (just like i doubt anyone ever wished it would mount in a limited fixed position on the camera without a cable. If we have to have this cableless design thing going on it would be nice to at least take into account all the productions that will be using traditional gear, im sure there is a way to accomodate both.

and if you try to use the evf with the lemo adapter A on the weapon on the operator side...yet another design i cant understand who approved. who deciding facing the cable to jam right into the operators head was the best orientation?

And i just picked up the lemo adapter B. It probably weighs as much as the weapon 7" itself. its huge! I dont need 500 quarter 20s on my lemo adapter. I just need a simple lightweight way to get my monitor into a normal position since without it I can only mount it directly in front of the handle where it is difficult to see and cant even fully articulate.

Overall ive been pretty impressed with the weapon's image but accessorizing this thing has been a nightmare. I cant wait until more 3rd party accessories come out, and if YOU make them, I am sure many people are looking for these same things! Not everyone needs their camera to be 3 pounds, have no cables, and look like an alien or a stills camera!

In terms of the DSMC2 7" LCD Touch there is a different model that was announced at NAB 2016, the RED Pro Touch 7" LCD (Hingeless):
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?144074-RED-PRO-Touch-7-quot-LCD-(-Hingeless-)

Which weighs 549 grams.

The new DSMC2 RED EVF OLED is designed to be streamlined and compact, certainly ideal for cableless rigging on the new cameras.

The solution I've found for many people using EVF plates and adding a small plate that pushes the EVF forward or backward on the mounting platform so the cable has clearance. Adds very little weight and removes all of the rigging frustration you might be experiencing.

Also, I imagine somebody somewhere has an optimized design for such things with a port gap to solve that as well.

Maybe you can provide some sample images on what is not working for you and then some sample images of how it might be improved. Usually you get a better response if you can provide a solution to the problem vs. just pointing out the problem. I am certainly guilty of just pointing out problems. :)

The WC EVF mount is very similar to the ET EVF mount, which I LOVED on the R1. Based on your description, it sounds like you would like a solution like that with an lemo integrated into the mount itself so the EVF attaches to it cleanly.

The B adapter weighs more than I was expecting. Perhaps WC will offer an alternate to the B like they do the A. WC takes design feedback and can even make custom parts if there is something you want. I have had custom stuff made from them in the past.

the hinge is actually pretty useful though, id just like to be able to mount it in a position where I can actually swing the hinge and not hit a handle.

And yes if the goal is cableless then an evf with no cable is ideal by definition ;) But unfortunately by limiting it to a specific point on the body with minimal articulation theres tons of situations where it sits in a very awkward position. I see the appeal for when you want to handhold a camera as if it were a stills camera, but even if you throw something like a cabrio on the lens suddenly you need to evf forward a bit, maybe your shoulder mount puts the camera higher, so you need to be able to drop the evf down a bit, etc. Very limiting design is all im saying.

Ive though about the evf plate, but between the evf plate and the offset required by the cable position you could end up where it makes more sense to operate left eyed!

Im not just being a naysayer, I like the camera and the images I get from it, I just suddenly have this new camera thats very awkward to configure to what I think is a very standard and normal way of working...

Yeah I can get sample images. I took everything apart in some amount of frustration last night before heading out on a job. Wont be back to the mess of parts for a week or so. I was more hoping other people had solutions since I havent found my own yet.

Some sort of compact right angle adapter off the evf would be ideal, or yeah an evf mount with an integrated cable could nice too. Id like to avoid having to use a noga arm to hold my evf is the main thing right now.

And yeah I think i will sell or return the B adapter and wait for something smaller. Ive definitely been in contact with WC in the past about custom peices. Hopefully someone there is reading this.

Totally feel your pain Mike.

We aren't aware of any solutions.

I'm sure they will come.

Guys,

I might have a suggestions for you. If you have our Wooden Camera UVF Mount V2, you honestly don't need anything else, you'll only have to flip the EVF upside down and put it into flip mode. You will definitely need a right angle LEMO cable for this to work.

I don't understand your frustration.

You can flip the picture, and do like Michael said which is fine.
You can also reverse the mounting sled side, and put the EVF on the bottom, and then turn everything right up. It should be above the EVF arm and you can still swing it (a bit less I agree)
I didn't test it with the new one as it's out right now, but there is room above, you can see it on the picture.

Yes, but it's the same, the clearance above the EVF mount arm, where the lemo plug is, is enough and you should have between 360° to 120° of rotation depending on where you placed on the Evf mount arm.

I'm just dealing with this problem now myself.
For some reason I'm not able to flip/mirror the image on the EVF, the option is greyed out on the Sidekick and just not there on the Red Touch. I'm on the latest release firmware...

So I've done something similar to what Berenger has shown, only I'm mounting from the top instead. Puts the EVF at a great position for shoulder operation but the lemo is still not in the best place, right angle cable pointing down doesn't really help.
It would be smart of Wooden Camera to make a sled specifically for the new EVF, slide it back a bit so the knuckle doesn't block the port.

At some point Mark L. Pederson mentioned that there is a design for an extended cable-less mount, not sure who'll be making it but it couldn't come soon enough.

Yeah that flips everything though. In the Monitor Control menu I'm able to flip an LCD but not an EVF. Not sure about previous builds as I didn't have an EVF at the time.

I forget if it is flip or flop, but one of those was implemented in the LCD itself, I believe. You could flip an image but not flop it, which was a popular complaint.

Has anyone else tried to use their EVF upside down?

Here is a pic of a custom EVF mount.

you can create 2 different looks, just assign the flipped one to the EVF and the other to the LCD SDI etc.
Of course, it limits your ability to use LUT then.

Maybe you can unmount the EVF to change the angle of the Lemo.
I remember doing it for the 1st gen EVF.

After that, there is Phil solution, the extra plate

Here is a pic of a custom EVF mount.
That mount is so weird. Big, bulky, really high for shoulder work, and seems too centered to be able to balance the rig.

This is for the Xenomorph rigging that they made specifically for Fincher's shoot. Because the shoulder mount has the camera sitting at shoulder height rather than eye level, they also needed an EVF mount that would bring the image up to eye level.

See Phil's post about it here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?144806-Fincher-Probst-Xenomorph-Mindhunter-Camera-Dept
