  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which SSD is the best?

I've got two OWCs raided in my macpro and two Kingston Hyperx's 240gb Sata6 in my macbook pro. Both work great and no issues. I would say up your ram to 8gb while your opening up you case. Dont forget to buy the special torx wrench too. :)
 
I've noticed that OWC's SSDs sometimes have issues with non-Macs. I know that sounds a little vague, but it's just a little something I've noticed on multiple systems.

What kind of issues? Just curious. We have about 40 of them here on PC systems. Haven't had any issues so far.
 
so none of you guys have tried the seagate hybrid 750 gb with 8gb of ssd? i really want to get an owc ssd for a laptop but the price per gb is so insane i really am leaning towards trying one of these hybrid seagate drives instead. they make sense when you only have one bay to use. obviously for desktops with more then one bay the ssd's for aps and hdd's for media is the way to go, but when confronted with one bay and slow bottlenecks for external drives i really think this seagate might have something to offer us guys with only one bay available. any of you tried the new seagate hybrids yet?

If it's a MacBook Pro you can have both. SSD + 2.5" spinning drive.

Well, that's why I wrote my post in a slightly vague way... I don't completely know. Most people (almost all) use the OWC's on Windows and Linux systems and have no problems at all. However, there are a few (apparently, it's only a tiny percentage) who report 'compatibility issues' involving motherboard communication issues. (At least that's what I heard from OWC directly.)

I personally tend to recommend them to Mac users only, however I think they're great drives and have had excellent experiences with them (I have four).

In my opinion, the OWC SSDs and *certain* OCZ SSDs are both excellent and very similar in terms of performance. So, I use OWC for my Macs and OCZ for my Windows and Linux workstations.
 
Those Seagate Hybrid HDD + SSD disks, while faster than most HDDs, are quite slow compared to true SSDs.

They're more like having a HDD with a second-level cache. Or like connecting a regular hard drive to a cacheing host controller, only the cache is now nonvolatile and located on the drive itself. They work awesome if you continuously access the same 4GB or so of information and it can regularly cache and retrieve it. Otherwise, they don't do much as the SSD portion is relatively small.

Hmm... I just got a similar yet totally unrelated idea... What type of speeds could be achieved if you striped multiple HDDs and SSDs together... I'm sure it's been done before, but I'd like to see four 3TB disks and a few SSDs striped together and see what happens. In fact, I think I'll try that...

Have you done any similar tests like this?

Don't striped drives need to be of equal size?
 
You can indeed stripe drives of different sizes. But you need to make sure your RAID controller or software supports this. Typically it's not recommended because you have to use differing block sizes between the differently-sized drives and/or the stripe becomes disproportional in terms of number of writes to a larger drive compared to a smaller one. Either way, the larger capacity drive gets used more.

In your idea above about striping some large HDDs with SSDs, I really don't know what it might do... Definitely would be an interesting experiment.
 
According to nearly everything I've read on OCZ, reliability is a concern there. The general consensus I've found is Crucial's M4 series are a good option. I've heard some positive things about Samsung's 830 series as well. I'm currently running this drive in my laptop and it's been great.

Just my .02-- take a look here and you will find a lot of the same.
