  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which Scarlet will you order on Nov.3 2011?

Is there anybody that will do fictional work on any of the Scarlets (which ever Pony is released)?

Which of these alternatives would be best suited for narrative fiction?

You are talking s35 and 2/3 right ?
Well, let me ask you this, do you think Benjamin Buttom would be a better narrative fiction with a s35m sensor ? Or the Hurt Locker, or Babel or...

Yeah. There is a lot to love about 2/3". Fictional material or not. So if the question was is there anyone out there who will choose to use a Scarlet 2/3" model for fictional material over other larger sensor options, I for one can say yes.

2/3 fixed (if there are any left as this seems to be in most people's kits). Need to put it on crane so there are no other reasonable options for this that I can see. After that, dunno. Another fixed or body with canon mount. Mabe an epic s if it comes out shortly - would have to so price.

What ever they release.
Not trying at all to be a smart ass, just the truth.
From where I sit, poised to make my first Indie feature, particularly with after effects strongly featured in my post, whatever RED offers will undoubtedly be my best option I believe.
And I'm extremely grateful for that and all of their work and ethos.

Personally I'm presuming it will be 2/3 fixed, kitted out. Sounds fantastic.

But if they do release multiple options at once, as is the premise of this thread. Then yes, pending $$ I would take a bigger sensor, interchangeable, and a set or mini primes over a 2/3 fixed.
It would have a bit more longevity and some creative advantages there for me I feel. But if it's 2/3 fixed, I won't be remotely upset, I will enjoy the advantages that it will provide.
Speed, simplicity, and a nice deep depth of field, while I expend the extra energy on making sure the performances and content is fantastic as I can get it. Win win imho.

Truth is, I know I'll be happy.

What matters most to me is, great resolution, (3k +) guaranteed tick, great workflow/codec, guaranteed tick, fantastic dynamic range, tick, High FPS, tick...tick tick...
This thing is LITERALLY going to go off! The only thing that does not seem to be guaranteed is a "big" sensor. Which as mentioned has some pros and cons for what I'm doing in any case.

Really the only thing I'm actually worried about is that I may miss out on the first batch, or some simple but essential extra accessories.
I'm sure they will be prepared for large volumes of sales. But surely the Scarlet will smash all records?

I guess final release price will have the most impact on early sales. 8k+ and a significant portion of people will likely pause and evaluate a lot more before ordering.

Anyhow, only one way to find out....

Truly wonderful days to be an Indie film maker.

On a technology level point of view I don't see a 2/3 vs. S35 Scarlet release. RED is all about giving us tons of options.
That's why I feel there will be S35 Scarlet. Unfortunately for some, the fixed lens will have to go. But... anyone loving 2/3 will have the option to shoot windowed on the S35 Scarlet - you'll just have to choose/find a lens for that option.
As for the mounts, Nov 3rd as it seems will also bring Nikon mount. So the future looks soooo flexible...
Options are always better than a "fixed" solution.

Whatever else happens, I believe you are 100% wrong about the fixed lens being dropped.

I don't mind being 100% wrong :-), I feel you are 30% wrong the fixed still being alive.
Would you also consider me being wrong if the lens stays, but it is not fixed anymore?
If indeed the "fixed" sticks, I don't see the sensor growing. For S35 it wouldn't be practical to build a lens with comparable focal lengths. This road would lead to at least 2 DSMC versions released until the end of 2012.

I will take 2/3rds or S35 doesn't really matter, what I really want is 4K for the increased resolution for stills.

I will order any scarlet on Nov 3.....

+1
Since last Scarlet specs were great with hdrx and all. Im sure what ever they realese it will be as good as this or better. If there are more the one Scarlet brain I take that decision on 3 nov.

Then get a Red One

I just don't see a 2/3 sensor camera being a possibility in the announcement. Same goes for fixed Scarlet. I can't see either being available for purchase in 3 weeks.

s35 is the time. i bought a panasonic af 101 in january.. then sony released the fs100. i sold the panasonic and bought the sony. now i got a sony fs 100 with atomos ninja an a set of nikkors... and the pictures looks awesome!
.. and now i m really curious about red will release a 2/3 sensor camera or a s35 camera.
and i hope there will be both.
and then i will sell my fs 100 :( and buy me a RED .. ha That's bad luck sony/panasonic

Why not? It is a perfectly practical workhorse format for TV production and fixed Scarlet would be a great run and gun camera for reality shows, docs and events, even a great stills camera for web photo journalists. Ultimate low cost robotic crane camera too. Lots to love about the fixed Scarlet.
Original Scarlet modular system plan was for a line of cameras, not just one. Don't know what will pop out on NOV 3, but there could well be more than one choice.
IMO having the ONLY under $10k 2/3" camera on the market in a world of $20k and up competitors is a very smart move for RED.

It all depends on whether RED wants to break into the run and gun market, or if they prefer to stay with the film market. We will find out Nov. 3rd

I guess everyone is just putting down their wish list. Shouldn't this have run a couple years ago (then again, it probably did!)?

I'm surprised no one (that I noticed) was wishing for a fixed lens with multi-speed power zoom. I know I am. And go ahead and put me in the larger than 2/3 wish list camp.
