  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which monitor are you all using?

I'm using the Red Control app interface with a Komodo Link tethered phone. For me this solves the SDI protocol issue and cuts probably 1-2 lbs from the rig. Without an external monitor I don't really need V-Mounts. Additionally the Komodo touchscreen is fiddly, a phone/tablet grants the best of both worlds, physical button interface monitored via the built in LCD and touchscreen through the phone. Plus I can't seem to adjust the Shinobi without pulling up all the overlays, the app provides a more integrated experience.

My problem is that the iPhone 12 Pro is a little small and I don't like the idea of my daily driver hanging off the camera, never mind that the phone clamp is forever trying to dial 911. A dedicated device would be preferred. Has anyone experimented with any of the cheap Android phones or tablets in the 6-8" range? Any recs?

Good Luck

When I still had my komodo, I had almost completely abandoned using it with a monitor and just used my phone.

Does anyone ever just use it without a monitor at all, just the built in screen? I feel like I remember being able to compose decently well on it, despite it's size, but critical focus was tricky. Does it have any kind of pinch to zoom? If it had that, I could probably make it work! (currently don't have a Komdodo to test) .

A bit pricey for what it is, but the Ultra 5 has been a perfect Komodo monitor for me. I just wish I would have gotten the Cine 5 instead. I don’t need 3000 nits, and the monitor is too small imo to comfortably mount a brick. The Cine 5 still has 2-pin lemo power, which is what I wind up using anyway.

Wish SmallHD monitors were less thick.

I also would recommend the RED Komodo Link Adapter and your favorite phone for max. flexibility/ versatility and get around the WiFi connectivity eventual issues/ lag.
The RED Control App is amazing to use once you have it set-up and know it well.

Any recommendations for articulating arms or monitor mounts that would be good for the indie 7 or cine 7? I was trying out my new Tilta shoulder rig this weekend and I found it really difficult to position the monitor in a way that worked. I saw that Smallrig makes an adjustable EVF mount which look like it might be a good solution. Would love to know what other people are using.

Notice for all Cine 7 users with remote software option
Since Komodo 1.7Beta firmware the camera menu button on the Cine 7 screen was corrupted. SmallHD issued firmware 5.3.0 which solves this problem.
