  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Which body would you use for this shoot?

Shooting a commercial next week - It's essentially 5 CU reaction shots in slow motion. All int on a dolly. The director wants 120 frames, at a minimum res of 4K.

I suggested a mini, but we're only capable of 2K at that frame rate. I have been out of the RED ecosystem for a while and a Helium is available. With the Helium, I can shoot 4K Full format @ 120. The crop factor is my biggest concern, it's a tight(ish) space and we want to be close and wide on our talent. Am I right in thinking the crop factor will be 1.69x (to S35) while shooting at this frame rate?

I've got a set of Cooke's, widest being 14mm but I just feel like that's not going to give me a close and wide feeling. I can't go and test until the day before the shoot - It's interstate.

Is the Helium my best bet for this? Any advice or suggestions? If the Helium is the best bet, any info/ suggestions on shooting at this frame rate?

You'd be much better off with the Gemini 5K if you can get your hands on one. At 4K, the Helium sensor has a 2.5x crop, so it's pretty significant. Whereas the Gemini only has a 1.55x crop (pretty standard s35 territory).

+1. The Gemeni is a better camera for what you're looking to do. Personally I think the 14mm Cooke you have would be adequate to get the close/wide look you're going for. Another option would be the Zeiss 12mm ultra prime, which would give you more in your FOV, but the close focus is not nearly as good as the Cooke's.

Yes, list of prefered cameras for 120fps as I see it.

Fantom flex 4k
Gemini
Mini
Monstro
Dragon
Helium

14mm sigma is the lens I would reach for.

Wich one is the mini? Alexa mini? or what mini?
