  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where is the new Arri Matte Box + FF combo?

Will the MMB-1 be sold separately?

I called Arri about that on Monday, and they can sell the items separately. However, if you think at some point you may want whichever item you didn't already get, it is cheaper to get the kit than to buy the mattebox and follow focus ala carte.

Can this be used on a RED camera using 19mm rods?

According to Arri's press release, the follow focus unit "can be supported from 15mm or 19mm bridgeplates using standard adapters," and it "is fully compatible with the ARRI line of standard follow focus accessories." That being said, it appears that the mattebox and bridgeplate come equipped for 15mm lightweight support, with no mention of adapters for 19mm. I've put in an e-mail to our sales rep. at Arri regarding this, and I'll let you know what I find out.

Here's the link to it on our website: Arri MMB-1 Kit

Catherine, is there an aproximated price for the bundle?

Yes, using a rod adapter. There are several models out there but now Abel has its own design that were making available in a special bundle with the MMB-1 and the MFF-1.

Is this on the Abel site yet Mitch? What kind of lead time are you expecting?

And for Catherine- When will we be able to buy the pieces seperately from film tools?

This will be on the Abel website in a matter of hours. We have inventory RIGHT NOW. Of course I expect we might sell out of this inventory with all the interest we have, but I know that there is a commitment for a steady supply to come in. With all of the uses for this stuff on just about ANY camera we suggested to ARRI that they should seriously ramp up the production expectations. That's part of the reason we can deliver at these prices -- volume.

No offense to FilmTools, but we consulted directly with Arri on the design of the mattebox and follow focus. We had the prototypes in our booths at NAB and CineGear and I've had a complete preproduction kit in my hands for more than a month. If anyone has any questions about the system then feel free to ask me. I don't need to check with Arri to find out.

I'll post some pictures here in a bit.

Here's some photos mounted on a RED with an 18-50 (camera courtesy Off Hollywood, thanks Mark). That's our new 19-to-lightweight-15mm rod adapter on the bottom of both the follow focus and the mattebox.

do we have to wait until it is posted on the website to order it? or can you serve it up directly?

one other question - will there be a 19mm specific pacakge that includes MB, FF, and adapter - i don't need the baseplate.

Here's some shots showing some of the great adjustability of the follow focus. I like the downward position for handheld, as you can push up slightly on the follow focus to better balance the camera when one-man-banding (no focus puller). The cone-shaped marking disk makes it easy to see the reference marks. The tilted up position is great when the camera is in a difficult spot such as mounted on a hihat sitting on the ground.

Here's some generic pictures of the mattebox, follow focus and our Abel rod adaptor. Please note that the thumbscrews on our rod adaptor have been changed to slightly beefier models so as to be more comfortable to grip. The curved shape of the rod adaptor both gives it strength and helps it clear all dovetails and other accessories.

Mitch, silly question, does it support 4x4 filters? Is there or will be a tray adaptor for 4x4 filters?

Awaiting quote... :)

Peter, did you send me a request for a quote? I have a huge pile of interest from people asking for quotes on this. I think we're getting to everyone, but if you're not sure then please send me your direct email and I promise we'll get back to you ASAP. Everyone can also contact our NY or LA offices directly to get a quote.

I apologize if anyone falls through the cracks. Response has been overwhelming. Arri promises us deliveries on a weekly basis to keep up with the demand.

Not yet available, but there will be two ways to mount 4x4 filters. The accessory top load system which turns the rear 4x5.65 tray into a top load rotating tray will also hold a 4x4 filter. And there will be accessory 4x4 trays that will fit the slots as well.

You can contact one of our offices directly for a quote or send me your email contact and we'll get something out to you. And yes, we have RED-specific bundles so that you get what you need.

The info is now up on our website in our RED Store. Pictures will go up during the course of the day (that's why I put them here in the meantime) and we'll have a video all about it up soon as well.

Mitch,
Is this a better option than an LMB-5 if you want a lightweight clip on?

Can it be adapted to other lenses, ultras, cookes etc?

Mitch,
Just sent a quote request to Abelcine. Wondering if you have 15mm studio (100mm spacing) adapters available?
Thank you.

BB
