  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where is Red's answer to Alexa NAB 2013 showreel?

it IS a big deal. no other camera on earth currently has colors or dynamic range that can match what you see int hat video period

Er... Um... What are you smoking? Alexa might edge out the EPIC (MX sensor) in DR in some situations that cater to its abilities. Can't touch EPIC shooting HDRx. Won't be able to touch Dragon. MX sensor and Alexa still are about a stop shy of what can be done with film.

As for colors, I'll admit that Alexa has better color rendition right out of the box when shooting their default LUTs, primarily if going to baked ProRes or DNxHD acquisition. When shooting RAW, it's irrelevant. Talk to your colorist about the color. I have zero trouble matching EPIC to Alexa's look and feel. A low-con filter and 1/4 soft in front of the EPIC and boom, I've got the Alexa look in terms of smooth and soft. Color is whatever I want it to be... with either camera... Alexa is a fine camera, I shoot with it too. And I prefer my EPIC for a number of reasons -- size/weight, resolution, flexibility, the way the company treats me, etc..

Now I have to wonder why I just fed the troll.

This statement is a load of B U L L S H I T. All sensors are not created equal. Nor are RGB color filter arrays. Nor is image processing...

Totally disagree. Give me an ARRI RAW clip. Grade it if you want. I'll match it. I'm not the only one here who feels this way, I'm sure there are plenty of others who will say the same thing. Toia comes to mind...

Jeff... Got any files or links to any side by side comparison with Epic(low-con+1/4 soft) and the Alexa by any chance? I am intrigues by this.

Thanks

Lets not be confused Red images are sharper than Alexa images thats for damn SURE!!! BUT in Hollywood they use a reliance/Reliant Noise reduction system sharpening system on almost all digitally acquired footage. Arri and Sony know this and so does Red.
If you mean Lowry Digital/Reliance Mediaworks, yes, their proprietary noise reduction / grain management / image enhancement process has been used on tons of features shot on many different cameras, including Avatar, Social Network, and many others. But every post house in town has similar competitive tools for tweaking grain and sharpness as needed. I think generally, the cameras are sharp enough nowadays that enhancement is not needed very often except possibly in lens-matching issues, and also in certain 3D issues.

nice images, no disrespect to the craft and quality of the work. Sad part is its 1/4 the resolution needed in today's acquisition.david

ARRIRAW is 2.8K. If you consider 4K as the right resolution for acquisition, then it is around 1/2 the resolution

Well I don't agree to that, Aaton Delta Penelope has more DR than the Alexa and the colors are better, imo. But it also depend on the situation, every camera has its strength and weakness.
