  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where is RED RAM???

The single level NAND based SSDs might have a sustained write speed that could let them drop right in and replace the Hitachi drives in the Red Drive.

The MasterDrive DX from Super Talent has a peak write speed of 70 MB/s and the OCZ SATA II peaks at 80MB/s. They should work if they can sustain at least a 25MB/s (30MB/s would be safer and 50MB/s would allow that sweet RedCode100). We don't have to worry about the write speed varying between the faster outer edge and the slower inner part of the disk... seeing as how it has no disk and all. The Hitachi runs from about 19MB/s at the inner edge of the disk on up to about 48MB/s on the rim.

It is the same form factor as the Hitachi 2.5" drives and since the retail prices are around $600 for the 32GB and $1,100 for the 64GB as compared to about $120 for the Hitachi HTS5416... if they can write fast enough, Red might be able to offer a 64GB Red Drive SSD for about $1,860 and a 128GB Red Drive SSD for $2,860.

I'd prefer to back up more often so the half hour that the 64GB drives would offer seems be the sweet spot for me.

Of course this is all just speculation on my part seeing as how I am not going to break open one of my Red Drives to test it.

Agreed, 64GB is a sweet spot for me too, I'd rather carry 3) 64's than 2) 128's.

I hope Red prices them in a way that does not tempt me to buy Red drives and swap the spinning nasties for SSD's myself. The $4500 for the 64GB in the store is about $2500 of temptation. Hopefully the final price will be more in line with media costs and reasonable profits.

It also seems that the better SSD's are fast enough to go with a single drive configuration. 80-100 MB/sec sustained write.

I agree..

64gb is perfect... unless there was built in redundacy and I would then happily run 128gb

I'm hopping this will mean that Red wil either allow higher frame rates with raid 0 OR two drive mirroring.. If the drive allowed this $4500 would be cool!!

I can't really see the Red Flash drive being good value at $4500 for 64GB when SSDs like the new Samsung 256GB are coming out with write speeds that are surely fast enough for RedCode RAW (160MB/sec must surely do?!!!). Red have given up for the moment on providing the SSD interface that was originally announced, saying the write speeds of SSDs aren't fast enough (hopefully the Samsung one will pass the test and make them change their mind...there's also a 1.8" version on the way):

It's all about sustained write speed. It doesn't matter if the media peaks out at 160MBps- if it then drops to 30MBps and hits 18MBps every once and a while. I can't afford to buy pairs of some ten or twenty different media for testing purposes but that's where I hope Red will allocate some time and money.

Once Build 16 is out the door of course.

I'd like to point out that when RED RAM was first announced (and priced) 32GB SSD's were around 1500 $.
Now you can find mid class 80MB/s Mtrons for around 500 $. And that's for small quantities.

I hope RED RAM won't be considered as high end solution only - price-wise. Its current pricing is in the opposite of Red mentality IMO.

A friend got a bunch of Mtrons for their servers and the speed was good but they started to crap out after a few weeks. They returned all the Mtrons and got some Super Talent and Memoright. They weren't happy with them either and support for all of them was non existent.

I saw CML that some prototype RED RAMs are already being field tested by some productions. So, who's hogging them? Soderberg? Peter Jackson?
