  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

...or RED FLASH or whatever it's called now. Where is it? I'd imagine that the RAID card in the RED DRIVE would be identical since 2.5" HDs and 2.5" SSDs are based on the same data transfer protocol. Are they shipping? Are they on a production delay? Are they on a development delay? Just starting to wonder where they are... I need some! RED DRIVEs just aren't stable enough to make me comfortable in most shooting situations.

So... are they soon? :) My credit card is getting antsy... :shiftyph34r:

I heard an A.C. the other day say they just used 2 of them on a car commercial last week. Apparently Keslow camera has a couple, could be hot air.. or could be a beta test. If there is a few out in the wild, means they are close to becoming real....something to look forward to.

I believe these will be the de-facto storage for most productions.

The flash drives that Keslow had were made in-house by Keslow technicians. One went out on a job [the job was aware that it was an untested homemade drive] and got mixed up with a RED DRIVE. The RED DRIVE failed/dropped frames, but folks mistakenly thought it was one of the in-house flash drives. Everybody figured out that the dropped frames actually came from a RED DRIVE after the fact, but the home-brew project was canned as the real RED FLASH drives were supposedly right around the corner.

I'm just excited at the proposition of having high frame rates on flash media. Spinning media gives me the willies, so I want to get those things on eBay as quickly as possible. I hope you're right! It'd be nice if they were just around the corner. :) I'm sure there are technical hurdles in the flash drives that I can't understand from the outside, but I'd just love a status update. Is it weeks? Months? More?

I'm sure someone enterprising could string a bunch of 8gb cards inside an enclosure and connect this to the flash output on the camera (thereby making a raid flash system) - Is this possible or am I off my chops?

Don't think even for one moment that flash storage will not crash like hard disk can.
Partition descriptors are there and I see 10 times more soft crashes on hard disks here then hard crashes.
That we do not see it on CF cards is just because it is 4 minutes instead 2 hour continuous write.

Nothing works better then backup, believe me.

Brook, those dropped frames that you are getting, is the camera telling you at the time that that is happening or are you only finding out afterward in post?

Would it be possible to just replace the drives in the Red Drive with SSDs?

I don't mean to condemn the RED DRIVEs... I know lots of people are having perfect success with them. Maybe I'm just bad luck. Either way, I just want a flash drive that I can bang around without dropping frames or crashing the drive.

werent the rams in the 4500 dollar range and 64 GB...?
8 cf cards are cheaper...its much more complicated i think then just inserting cfmedia into a drive...?

CF cards are limited by speed and size. You cannot shoot 29.97 RC36 onto the cards and you cannot shoot 120FPS onto the cards. You're also limited to 4-5 minute loads.

I'm also anxiously awaiting the RED FLASH Drive. I'm assuming that it will be quite a bit faster than the HDD-based RED DRIVE, hopefully the FLASH drive will have a SATA port.

I think 16 and 32 GB cards are not that far away at a fraction of the price, so the $4500 for 64GB seems like year old pricing for old specs. I would think that by the time the thing is really ready, Red could give us a 128GB or better, and at possibly a lower price.

I am looking forward to the RED-RAM too. 16 and 32 GB cards would be great, but they still won't be able to handle RC36 or higher frame rates. For the RED-RAM I would be happy with 96GB for $3999 with the ability to handle 48fps of 4k RC36.

With the rapid improvement of SSD technology, especially Intel's latest SSDs, I don't doubt we'll see the RED RAM or whatever they call it at least double in capacity and possibly drop in price simultaneously. Their performance might improve some, too, over what SSDs could do before.
