I've been wondering where the destination of my USA-trip should be next year when I travel to the States to buy the Red Scarlet camera? Las Vegas? L.A.? New York? Can anyone guide me here.

At the moment you can only buy Red cameras directly through Red.

http://www.red.com/store

If you buy onsite you will end up paying California sales tax of like 9% or something.

Much better to have it sent to you, either in your home country or to another State in the U.S., like Las Vegas, as out of State delivery means no tax!

You WILL be taxed when you bring your camera home. I don't recommend trying to hide it or convincing Customs it's a 'happy snap' camera for your holiday!

hahahaha, No, that wouldn't work, but you can always try convincing them it is a flux capacitor, which has a tax tariff of....hmmmm...it is not in the tax tariff schedule

While I would never advocate dodging taxes, it kinda depends on the country. If you put a single lens on the camera with few accessories you might get by without paying heavy duties. It can be made to look somewhat inconspicuous. This:

You get the idea...

Then again, some countries don´t charge custom fees on the camera, like mine - Norway (although we probably pay more taxes than any other western country), The RED ONE initiates a tax of 0% + VAT (value added tax) which every registered business can reclaim - so my purchase price for a RED ONE is exactly 17.500$ + shipping.

Good to see that Norway and Australia both have RED users inerests at heart. Our situation is the same - there is no customs tariff on any digital cameras so tax of 0% + GST (local version of VAT). There is some debate about some of the accessories but at worst they only attract 5%. Now if we could just find some way to get around the $3.72 tariff on the Tee shirt.....
Real problem here can be the fluctuating exchange rate - this can really ruin your day if you pick the wrong time to pay for your goodies

in my country we are not at all lucky
we pay import tax 25% plus VAT 17%, so my red cost +-25500USD plus shipping
plus al the extras which also pay the same taxes.... a lot of cash....

as a company I do get to deduct the VAT...at least

It's the same here too. Doesn't worth to order anything.

What if you took your existing (perhaps hypothetical) Red to Germany for a shoot. Would you have to pay taxes on your way back to Hungary?

You should get yourself a carnet before leaving, then get it signed as you leave hungary, and then again as you leave Germany.

Once it's in the EU, no more taxes or customs fees apply to anything. It's a customs union.

Hi Eirik,

It's possible that customs will come back to you in the next 5 years and ask for some. Red UK does not get the 0% rate on cameras as it's not a digital stills camera.

Question..if say 2000 red one owners submit their cameras back to RED HQ as a EPIC tradein..then can we buy one or more of these used Red camera bodies from RED after words at 8-10,000$..is this possible in 2010...

That's only if you have it shipped - if you bring it in yourself in some beaten up peli cases you could probably convince them that you had it when you left the country... Not that I'd condone trying to dodge taxes, of course.

A more legal way is that coming into Australia you get a certain limit where you don't have to pay tax (like $1000 or $800 or something) but if you go with a few people who aren't bringing anything in you somehow have their limit added to yours.

Technically speaking it is a digital stills camera and I can prove it. It makes 24 or even more still pictures per second.

One needs to be careful with UK Customs & Excise, there is no limit to the amount of alcohol & cigarettes you can bring from France for personal consumption, however Customs & Excise have seized a large no of cars that were carrying more alcohol than they thought appropriate.
