  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When will Dragon be available for sale in stock ready to buy it now

Epic M dragon is ( atleast ours) a fully functional camera. In terms of color science and such I can only say that it's kicks everythings ass as it is now allready and it's huge difference from MX. The colors are just right, and behaves perfectly linear when altering them in red cine our such. From my testings getting a dragon CF today is probably very much worth while. I'm actually considering buying a CF even though we got an Dragon M. Yesturday I just missed out on a 40 day rental since our camera was booked on a couple of shorter projects. So if you got some connections I think having a CD now will probably payoff in just a couple of months if you rent it out that is.


Check this lowlight frame... to me this looks perfect, it's like my old Kodak genesis 4k scans back in the good days... I have not seen such images in over 10 years....

it's straight out of RCXP with no other color alternation than ISO and kelvins and it looks just as good if I bring up or down the iso, colors remain the same, super accurate..... Thats something the MX just does not do.

I think RED should do a "upgrade to dragon Carbon" program. Basically hand in your camera pay the difference and upgrade to dragon que. That difference would be easy to make up for I think.

You also get hours and hours of transcoding after every shoot. Alexa got it right making post flexible and scalable with the ProRes, in camera option.
 
I never quite understand the big pro res Alexa advantage being so highly touted, when there are fairly inexpensive simultaneously record ProRes solutions for the entire Red line, including the Pix 240 (which now does 10 bit 444) and the AJA, and Convergent Deseign among others -- carrying the r3d TC and file-naming protocol. I deliver Red ProRes files all the time on set for clients who want them, and there's the r3d's for back up and if there's ever a need.

I guess it's how you look at it. I would consider having baked in colour/wb and 2k actually "less flexible".

ProRes is one option for Alexa...raw recorder is available as another option for Arri. More options, means more flexibility in post.
Everyone suggests an external recorder option for Epic, which is great for sync sound, but not if there is much overcranked recording. There's just not enough time in the shoot day to playback into the recorder.

Hmm,
if you shoot raw on alexa then you got these options, render proxies for editing... this is quite time consuming and the non compressed raw is very heavy and you need to make sure you got both time to render and disc space... you also only got quite low frame rates so using raw on alexa is quite a limitation and quite demanding for post.

Using profess on the alexa usually means that you need to render proxies as your files are still considerably heavy and they will not play well in most editing programs including avid. When shooting proress and high frame rate the alexa drops down to 4:2:2 and that picture has considerably less options when it comes to grading. Also prores is not raw it's baked, and frankly it's not "pro" at all, if you ask me it's a shitty format that should be avoided as far as possible especially when doing di.

To me now with the new fast gpu renders r3d's are really the format that beats the rest. Why on earth would you want your files as something else on set? we use pix260 and such but that's just for video assist and playback while shooting an such.
 
if not overcranking and you need proxies/dailies an offboard recorder works fine. if you are over cranking, rent a rocket or over night the encodes...its not that big a deal i think. as for whats the better buy as of now who knows...id wait on arri 4k tho this late in the game rather then buy another hd camera

Ok.. here are the details for the Carbon Fiber Upgrade...

Carbon Fiber Upgrades at this time can only be done when your camera is in for the Epic M-X to Dragon sensor upgrade.

Price is $19,750 for the upgrade to take your Aluminum Dragon and upgrade it to a Magnesium and Carbon Dragon. Doesn't matter if you are Epic M or X , as the upgrade pretty replaces almost everything in your existing camera. That price is on top of your Sensor Upgrade.

This includes the upgrade to Magnesium / Carbon Fiber Brain, Replacement to a new Carbon Fiber Side SSD ( either mini or normal ) , and replacement of your Ti PL mount to the new Magnesium PL Mount.

This is not going to be a normal process you can buy through the store.. you need to ask for this through your Bombsquad Rep either in advance ( i.e. now ) or right before you send you camera in for the upgrade. The only exception to that is the guys out there that have received their sensor upgrades already or have them in our shop for upgrade as we speak.

So lets try this out... I don't think this option will last for long. If this upgrade ends up choking out our Carbon line we will need to kill it. It takes A LONG time to machine and make the Carbon Fiber panels for each Dragon Carbon camera so please don't be upset if this option vanishes unexpectedly.
