  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When it's announced...

Yup. I also heard Ted say that in a interview from NAB. But I'm referring to a recent post, and I don't recall it mentioning anything about any reserve for RED owners or a short window - but it wouldn't surprise me if that still is the case. Then again, if there in fact should be enough for "everyone", then I don't get the point of a short window for RED owners - other than some short lived exclusivity if that means anything for some...? Such a deal kinda makes me think that there might not be enough for "everyone" - meaning, there might be either a short - or very long waiting list...? Hope not!!! I'm personally optimistic and I'm hoping for a little - to no cue at all :)

1. I take the 'short window' just as little 'thank you' from RED to existing owners, saying 'we haven't forgotten you'.

2. I don't think it's unfair of me to say that RED have had their issues with product availability and delivery; the EVF saga alone was a serious clusterf**k in my opinion. We also know they've recognized their shortcomings in this area and have instituted 'adult supervision' to avoid such occurrences in the future. RED ONE was, and EPIC is, a camera people aspire to: 'maybe one day I'll be able to afford a RED'. With Scarlet, that will change; suddenly, for a whole lot of people, it will be 'this is a camera I can afford!'. I'm utterly certain RED will know, see, and avoid the situation where people are saying 'Scarlet? Yeah great camera, we could afford one, but good luck getting your hands on one...!'.

Unless they seriously screw up the estimated demand, they won't put it on sale until they know they have the stocks and the production capacity to satisfy everyone who wants one, with no backorders. They want to lay that ghost once and for all.

That's my take on it, just from reading the entrails.

I believe you nailed it right there. This is also my feeling from what I've gathered. I also believe that the release of SCARLET will mark another big turning point for RED as a business :)

Apparently, there may not be a reservation period. They may just try to make enough to have supply on demand. However, there has been some talk in the past about previous red owners having some kind of priority... That may just mean they can order sooner than others. It might be silly to take reservations if they are all going out the door within a week of each other. We'll see.

Either way, we've been told to suspect some amount of heads up, and I would guess there will be an email going out as well. Anytime there's a really important update, it gets emailed as well.

From the "10 QUESTIONS..." thread. So, as of 6/26/11.

(10) Delivery. What's the current plan on Scarlet distribution? Through people like B&H, or strictly through RED? Will previously existing customers receive special "dibs" or are we starting off fresh? Pre-orders or only available after the "In Stock" listing on RED.com?

Direct from RED at the beginning. No Pre-orders. We hope to make alot of them very quickly so there shouldn't much of a waiting list.

suddenly, for a whole lot of people, it will be 'this is a camera I can afford!'.

Not if they keep bumping the prices up. (I know some they can't control...)

Personally I think it will be released at end of this year, to early next year..... If its released earlier great! If not... no surprise there. :rolleyes5:

Prove me wrong RED.

I think they will take alot of orders and set delivery for 2-4 weeks and everyone will be very happy. But when is still not sure.. As soon as Epic X starts rolling out at the end of this month we will know better.

Ahhh that's one of the places I got it from....

It was previously stated that R1 owners have first option which leaves the possibility that all scarlets in the beginning can be snapped up by rental houses. Is there a limit to the number of scarlets an R1 owner can order as part of their first option?

Depends on how quickly we are making them. We will try and ensure nobody abuses the system.

So there WILL be some kind of priority for RED ONE owners when it comes to ordering Scarlet.

We will see Scarlet coming from a mile away. RED always has, and always will, spill the beans as progress is made.

Yup. That really says it all right there. We're spoiled that RED provides such transparency, to help us make informed buying decisions. However, I think if you expect to see a Scarlet "count-down clock" on the RED site or on this forum, you'll be disappointed. I'm sure we'll get word that it's weeks away or less, then a formal announcement when it's posted for sale, similar to recent accessories or the Epic-M. For now, I think you can breathe easy NOT checking in every day, lol.

I disagree after all the moaning from Scarlet wannahaves I think Scarlet release will be pretty swift. I think as Jarred gave a clue that if we see people shooting with it, we will be close. I don't think until they literally have a warehouse of Scarlets will they let people publically shot with it and show footage.

I have an feeling that there is already a warehouse with hundreds if not thousands of completed Scarlets. I wouldn't be surprised.

then why RED don't sell them?
i wonder :)
Yes, i believe there are a few Scarlets ready, waiting for a final touch and the release-firmware-build. Remember the picture from Jarred "army of scarlets". ;)
But with only a few hundreds, Scarlet would go on backorder within minutes and with all the current supply-chain issues that status probably won't change fast enough, i guess thats a situation RED wants to avoid.

And then there is the firmware.... I think there are some features that have to be finished and polished, before Scarlet ships. Something like playback or audio for example, and the whole software for the electronic lens is also something new.

So, while they probably could make happy a few, they would upset a lot more and they would risk bad reviews because of bugs or missing features. I would love to buy into a beta-program, but i understand why RED is choosing to not go this way with Scarlet.

BTW, not checking back daily? Not possible, can't resist. :)

If, and it's a big IF, there are already Scarlets ready to ship... I think the big problem is the huge demand for accessories. Close to 10,000 Epic-Xs will soon be shipping and the need for SSDs, Monitors, REDvolt batteries etc will be, understandably, prioritised for the Epic-X generation.

Hopefully the problems RED had with production are coming to an end and we can all get working cameras without huge backorders. But, those of us that were not R1 owners will have to show patience while the excitement of Epic-X hits the forums.

DAMN YOU AL GORE!!!

lol

Wait what if is Gores fault after all?... He pissed off the environment with his movie which caused the tsunami which caused the supply chain issue! ah HA! We solved it!!!
