  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

When is the cheaper Scarlet fixed coming?

Hey!

What's the deal with the Segway?!

I was told it was going to revolutionize transportation. CLEARLY that is NOT the case. FALSE advertising.

Not if you're being chased down by a fat security guard on one ;) .

You guys do realise that Red will only have a limited number of reject sensors from Epic production to use on Scarlet X/ Epic S. Eventually they will have to start using non reject sensors or hold off selling more until more sensors come in. I think some customers might be very lucky and get full quality chips.

The same 1st quality sensors are being used in both cameras. The processor ASICs are the difference. ASICs that aren't reliably fast enough for Epic's highest data rates are used for Scarlet. Except for some software features and frame rates limited by lower max data rate, 55MBs vs 250MB/s I believe, there is no difference between the cameras.

Exactly.

Speed Binning.

Intel has done it for a long time.

David, i have been looking for the original postings that the RED team made in here about this issue. Could you please direct us to that thread ! Is it possible that that thread is deleted !?

Don't know that thread..but here's from Scarlet Announcement FAQs:

How can you offer Scarlet-X at this price when EPIC is so much more?

Data rates and processing power. ASICs that weren't fast enough for EPIC… just became a gold mine for Scarlet. This, and board component reduction, allows us to lower the data rate throughput and significantly reduce our costs over volume.

OK I thought I read about sensors, but that is good news. As long as you can hit visual loss less, low light image quality is very desirable. But still, the scarket was canned and the epic s rebadged.

I agree to some extent, but I remember the Epic S being quite a bit more capable. Sure it's around the price range but I think they said it would be capable of 60fps at 5K. At one point I was actually really hoping for the Epic S, it would've been buying one thing here and one thing there, so what they released was a happy medium for me in a way in that it allowed me to afford more of a package around it with 4K ability.

Wayne I was somewhat shocked and confused as you appear to be when the change was made, but after time thinking about it I'm happy with the direction that was taken and really see the benefits, power and capabilities behind what they did give us. Especially at the price if ordered before Jan 1.

OK, wrong again, but Scarlet is fulfilling epic s purpose, and dumbed down. :)

It is, Wayne your in Colorado right?

I think I remember you being from CO. If you'd like to check it out at any point just let me know and I'd be happy to give you a demo of the camera to see what it is!

Thanks mate, but from Australia in a northern part that mirrors Colorado in a way, on the edge of the wilderness (it was the frontier when my youngest grandfather was born, and just starting when the oldest was born, and you could make multiple feature films out of the stories just in driving distance), I think one film that had international release that was a bit further away was "We of the Never, Never". Should give an idea of real frontier living like it was into early last century.

He, he, if it is 144mb/s inter that sounds interesting, those JVC guys have not heard from me in nearly 10 years. But it sounds a bit pricy for what you get, probably would prefer a gh3. But look, a Scarlet fix should knock it flat, big data rate quality, higher frame rate and Red's upcoming 3d solution discussed elsewhere, just the nice little box brownie package we/all ways wanted. The idea of this thread is too promt Red to do a fixed in future, well a small lower cost camera with auto features detachabke kens at least. As you can see even if Red relesed 3k last year or the year before, big brand competitors could easily move up their 4k releases and crush it just on familiarity (one tenth the sales, or at least as much as x is now selling). 4k was a survivalable target that could win market share over 1/2 inch h264 cameras. 3k was a mistake that was meant for another era, 2006, that would have put competitors marketing schedules (camera improvement and format transitions schedules) in disarray) that is how you fight a war, beat them where it hurts and keep gaining realistic ground while they try to keep playing games of step by step diplomacy to lower production costs.

I was coming to this thread to post that exact thing. Keep the link handy for whenever anyone else asks for a Scarlet Fixed.

For real, that cameras quality is a direct insult to a scarlet fixed s16mm 4k, even the 3k. I would not flash that around too much.

Btw: Yes, I and others, are saying that the pro fixed should be at least 4k s16 high frame rate, oreferabky with the 3d fix, as a minimum competitor. We are not advocating old 3k fixed.

I should point out, I came up with design solutions to fuse the fixed and detached models together. You can make the sensor wit mount segment rotatable. The standard auto lens can be side mounted in a recess in the side of the camera, where it can also be operated, achieving a shorter length firnat factor, similar to the fixed. When you put an external lens on, the mount can be rotated outwards and around, allowing a standard lens to be mounted with the body behind it, which allows an Eng like camera rig to be used. Best of both worlds. You can also have the lens facing out the side if you could find a use for it. You could try to mount some standard lens in the recess also.

Certain controls would of course be movable.

Love to see water proofing on the camera and standard auto lens, also, for field work, real camera work.

I'll tell you what, the Eng and even the slr companies must have been rubbing their hands together in glee when they heard the fixed and mountabe 2/3rds was cancelled, less real competition.

Even worse, the Jvc is using 1/2.3 inch format, like sub $100 cameras, not exactly 1/2 inch.
