  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's up with the RPP's??

To be honest I don't really want a physically larger chip. I'd much rather trade extra size for having a bigger selection of compatible glass. We have almost 100 years of making cinema glass to cover a roughly A35 sized imaging area.

the dragon sensor, hopefully, will just be the same rez or even slightly higher. but same size chip with a much better s/n ratio, and more native DR. that's all it really needs. reducing the amount of lens options you have by going with a FF chip, limits creative choices, because lens selection in itself is a creative choice. sure the FF look is great, but you're reduced down to rehoused pl versions of still lenses, still lenses, and medium format lenses. all which have their own set of drawbacks in a production. so unless people really want to be shooting nikon, canon, zf's/cp's etc. etc. as their only lens choice, one would hope it's just an improved sensor, rather than a larger one. like the mx to the m sensor.

I don't usually jump in to theses sort of conversations but I caught this one and thought it was a bit silly. I would like to point out that a larger sensor (which red has always maintained they were going to release) could in no way limit you choices. I does not mean that Nikon, Canon< Zeiss ZF's and CP's are your ONLY choices at all. Conversely it adds these choices. You would always have the option to shoot windowed super 35 format (are smaller for that matter), yet in addition to all the options you have know you would also have a new option of shooting larger formats as well as any advancements in DR and signal to noise ratio that come with the updated sensor design.

Why not use a DSLR camera if Super35 is not the format your interested in... Cinema lenses are made for Super35, I think most people shooting cinema wants a sensor optimized for cinema, not as a windowed second best option...

For years, the scheduled follow-up to manual RPPs was to be a set of electronic interface lenses, not electronic as in lens data ala Cooke S4i but electronic as in in-camera control of focus, aperture, (and potentially even zoom) ala Nikon/Canon electronic lenses. Given the way RED is pushing the industry, it wouldn't be all that surprising if they are full-frame 35mm.

I thought 70mm and vista vision was cinema... I think there are quite a few flicks out there that you fancy for the nice camera work that was shot on larger formats than super 35. The lenses for these formats have been around for about 40 years or so... So this is nothing new. And it will progress for sure.

Sure, I mentioned larger formats earlier in the thread. FF35 is still fairly close to Super35, I would rather see a 70mm lens system and sensor/brain, than FF35. :)

Man, you know how annoying its going to be if the Dragon is FF.

I will literally kill someone of i have to go back to the living hell of Canon lenses.....

Back to topic - I feel pity for everyone who has started investing in the RPP set, myself included, who might not be able to complete a set, before the production runs out. I did not buy the 50 mm yet... An official word by RED would be greatly appreciated!

not sure if SCARLET is eligible for DRAGON - seems unclear...

It's very clear. Scarlet is eligible for Dragon. It's the reason I bought one.

Or get the best of both worlds. Bigger chip and higher resolution. Shoot 5k s35 or 8k FF35. A kid can dream...

The list of reasons not to use a DSLR is a long one.

Or make a new series of RPPs with faster aperture and a more compact build :)

And I think they would be working on FF35 and maybe electronically controlled for redmote pro...

I just fear that they will largely increase in price then, too... and with that they would again get out of reach for me...
Guess I'll be renting non-canon lenses for quite some time...

Remember this?

smaller, faster, cheaper.... Pick two.

My guess would be two fold:

  • New Primes that are lighter but better specs in every way possible while maintaining the original RPP's price point. All the talk from Epic / Scarlet owners is that the RPPs are just too big for the camera (which makes no sense to me, but it is being said). Possible electronic focus will be added but mechanical will not be abandoned.
  • New Zooms that incorporate still & ENG camera features (autofocus and zoom control via camera control surfaces). Probably around F/2.8 but not as broad a a range as the Optimo DP Rouge lenses (lens to lens). Three lenses to cover 18mm to 100mm would be ideal.
