I got a gig coming up and was wondering whats more stable...and if the auto color matching is in 10 as well or is that an 11 only feature set? thanks guys! ps anyone got good links to learn resolve? i'm trying to prep on it the next 3 weeks to be overly prepared...

No, Color Matching is a v11 feature. There are some issues with Color Matching, particularly if the chart is not well shot.

My personal opinion is that the Beta v11 is not quite there for using it on a commercial project yet, but I think when BMD finalizes the release version, it'll most likely be fine.

I bought the tutorials from ripple training. They are made by Alexis Van Hurkman who also wrote the Resolve manual and at least for me this guy is a pleasure to listen to.

Cheers, Ulf

I would start with these:

Warren Eagles' FXPHD Resolve Tutorials:
https://www.fxphd.com/store/fast-forward-resolve-v10-fundamentals/

Alexis Van Hurkman's Resolve Tutorials:
http://www.rippletraining.com/categories/avid-adobe-davinci-courses/davinci-resolve-products.html

Alex's Van Hurkman's Color Correction Handbook:
http://www.amazon.com/Color-Correct...d_sim_b_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1CHXH704NKTQ12DRM6BZ

Patrick Inhofer's "Tao of Color" newsletter and website are also informative resources:
http://www.taoofcolor.com

The Resolve user guide (also written by Van Hurkman) is also very good, but you need some time to go through all of its 750+ pages and relate it to the various modes, menus, controls, and screens, plus the experience and understanding of when one feature is better suited to solving a problem than another.

Good luck in trying to learn all this in 3 weeks. My joke is that it took me 10 years to become a mediocre colorist... but luckily, that was the 1980s. I've gotten better since then.

Are you talking about the new features or Resolve in general? Because if there's nothing wrong with the calibrated output and the usual tools used before v11, then you would still benefit from the faster speed of the software.

Go with v11 beta2. I feel it's even more stable than v10 and the additional 150 features will benefit you daily.

Agreed, been very stable so far. V10 was buggy on my rMBP but v11 has been solid.

Gee, 10.1.5 has been rock-solid for me on a new Mac Pro. What specific problems were you having?

BMD is still in the process of finalizing the v11 software. I'm always a little antsy about using Beta-test software on anything for which I'm being paid. I don't like making my clients a guinea pig.

I have absolutely no problem if somebody has a dual-boot system and wants to do tests and experiments with new software like Resolve 11. In this case, the o.p. specifically asked about Color Match, a feature which doesn't exist in v10.

It's a Macbook pro so slightly different ;)

I was getting out of memory errors when just importing RED footage into the media pool. So I couldn't even color in a 1080p timeline at 1/2 res good (viewer would go black and if I did anything the error would pop back up)... Pretty crappy. Haven't had that error message with v11 and I'm running it in a 6K timeline at 1/4 res. Not real time playback but at least no errors.

Thanks guys!

The DP says version 10 on his last film was giving him trouble with syncing sound, mattes and exporting them. He wants to start with 11 and go back if its too buggy. We are planning on shooting Alexa Plus or Dragon depending if we can get an Arri to fit our budget. My system is a fully kitted rMBP, if we go Dragon I have a Rocket X, and I'll try and get them to budget for Promise TB2 arrays for storage.

I have used redcine up until this point and am just transitioning over to resolve, so I have done some significant looks work previously, just nothing as powerful as Resolve since I was doing one lights and not tracking mattes. Can anyone substantiate if the DP is right and Resolve 10 is more buggy then Resolve 11 regarding dual system sound, matte tracking, and exports? He didn't give me specifics on the set up, drive speed, codecs, cameras, just mentioned there was problems for him last time with 10. I will try and get more information.

PS Matthew Scott I recognized your name from RU when I saw your tutorial, very funny stuff, kept it lively :)

I am basically dedicating the entire time between now and the shoot to exploring both programs, starting with all the tutorials and reading as well as playing with it. I just wish I knew if I was going to stay on version 10 or 11 since that would give me more focus as to which program and features to really focus on... But yes Marc I wouldn't dare call myself a colorist, more so just trying to fulfill the DIT role and translate the DPs vision to the real colorist down the post pipe line.

PS no Dragon color/gamma 4 in either version right now, correct? Thanks so much guys!

update DP says resolve 10 wouldn't export with a Academy Matte overlay on 16/9 footage for his DIT on the last gig. Do you know if this is still a problem with Resolve 10? Thanks!

Hey guys I found this great dailies tutorial I thought I would share on Resolve 10. I think I am going to try and stick with 10 since its not in beta and I want things to go smoothly. The tutorial deals with Arri Log C, our preferred tool if the budget allows so that part was extra sweet too!

PS does anyone know if resolve 10 can do Red dragon color and gamma? There is a slight possibility we end up not being able to budget for Arri and shooting Dragon so I again am just trying to be overly prepared and am literally prepping like non stop between now and the shoot in order to just try and prepare for any foreseeable problems.

And does anyone know if there is anyway to run 11 and 10 on the same machine, just in case I need to dabble in 11 for some reason the DP prefers if I have both available...

I usually just use Redcine for dailies so I am new to this particular workflow and appreciate your patience with me! Thanks so much!

I've never heard of this in my life. Adding a 4x3 matte using output blanking in the Track mode would be easy, but the question is whether you'd want it partially transparent or something (which can also be done). This is pretty trivial to anybody who knows what they're doing. I don't think this mode changed in v11. If you wanted to be tricky, you could set up a mask as a power window, precisely calculated to 4x3, and then make it partially transparent with the output key level. Or just color-correct it with a 10% luminance shift. Lots of ways to approach this.

You cannot run v10 and v11 on the same machine, at least not in the same boot drive. You can create two boot drives and then reboot the machine if you want the features only available in v11. In general, though, for dailies v10 is going to be fine. Heck, I think v10 will be fine for 95% of most final coloring, too.

Seems like his previous DIT was coming off Resolve 9, where applying the Matte is now a little different in Resolve 10 and 11, which is what manuals are for, alot of little things were changed like that.

You could still do it as a Track node, even in v9. I'm amazed somebody wouldn't use something so basic and simple. Takes five seconds to do.

I have a theory on what the export problem was...(came to me in a dream strangely enough this morning)

On this project he wants to shoot Alexa Log C in 2k and then crop to 1.33 with a matte... Can't Resolve 10 lite only output 1080HD outputs? Assuming he was doing 2k on the last job (I don't have enough details to really determine the problem) wouldn't that cause exports to not work? Cuz I assume the DIT was using the lite version...

Since this project calls for 2k Log C with 1.33 matte and synced/colored dailies (if we score a cheap Alexa) I am thinking I have to go to version 11 or buy the full version of 10, correct? I just want to anticipate any issues ahead of time, the costs aren't necessarily super relevant since I can pass them on. Also choosing which version to focus my studying on does help, since there are some minor changes between v10 and v11... I agree the stability worries me...I know he wants his dailies in prores so I will have Avid MC7, and Apple FCPX on the machine so even if things go to hell in a hand basket I will at least have other applications as back ups for dailies creation. I figure IF they go Alexa prores Log C won't be that hard to work with (relative to other formats) so at the very least I have lots of options for what can read it natively. I am going to test version 11 of resolve out with some prores 2k files I am going to pump out of redcine, I don't have dual sound to test but at least this can help me see if there are any bugs/deal breakers now to help me circumvent using 11...

I've never had any trouble syncing sound in Resolve 10, but I have had trouble with output to Avid. Via MXF/aaf, the preset "round trip" setup. For reasons my editor and I have never figured out, the audio comes into Avid as hash about 20% of the time. It never happens with a simple QT output, either in DNxHD or ProRes, only when using the MXF/aaf package. It has to do with the avid reading the bit depth wrong, but we can't figure out what triggers it. The workaround, though, is simple: just output the dailies as QT files.

In any case, you should find a way to get some double system audio to test with. (Ideally from the machines you'll actually be shooting with.) Syncing sound is not difficult, but troubleshooting it if it goes wrong can be very time confusing and time-consuming. You don't really want to be doing that on set.

BTW, if the cost of the full version of 10 isn't a concern, I'd suggest you buy it. The upgrade to 11 is free, so you just take those limitations out of consideration.

Yes I am going to buy 10 I think. I gave the DP the description of the situation and am sure he will agree (but its low budget so maybe we just go for 11 if production doesn't want to have to buy 10). As for the MXF problem I saw on that tutorial I posted that MXF metadata saves the Resolve Project name and that it can cause problems. Not sure if that is the actual issue, but its a known MXF specific issue...

I think its really tough since both versions are buggy is the true reality from all of what I read. I almost want to do the dual boot just to hedge the situation...

The other problem I am having is Arri Look Creator is not compatible with my new system, do any of you happen to know if Arriraw converter can make Luts for Alexa Plus when we are shooting prores log C 2k and not Arriraw? I am more Red based than Arri so I have a slew of things to wrap my head around over the next 2 weeks plus...I am asking for prep days just to verify everything will work

No, that's definitely not the problem. Avid imports the audio and video just fine, but sees the audio at the wrong sample rate, so it plays as hash. And with the MXF/aaf workflow there appears to be no way to change that after import. I don't know if it's a Resolve bug or an Avid bug; we haven't been able to identify a trigger.
