  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's in a name? (AKA: does "Scarlet" automatically imply "prosumer"?)

Free being the important word here. I dunno. For those looking to make money with a Scarlet it will be the quality of their work that makes them money, not the name of their camera

I completely agree!

Producers on the whole aren't interested in buying cameras, Photographers buy cameras. That's why there will not be any shortage of would be producers at your door expecting you to bring the gear... And trying to get you to bring it for free.

fair enough.. let me re-phrase the indie world as far as scarlets go...

the craft services PA will have a scarlet, that he will rent to production for 100 bucks.

someone will already know someone with the camera system..

so your chance of rentals in this market are slim to none UNLESS you already have ties to the production.. orrrr you hustle the shit out of craigslist.

I agree. It's confusing.
For me (as the future owner of several Epics) I'm on the opposite perspective. The producer will wonder why my EPIC costs three times as much to rent vs. the office PA's Scarlet S35.
I suggest, to avoid this confusion, that Red eliminate the Scarlet S35. ;)
Cheers,
Harry

I agree with Harry and others who have posted similar responses. The people who frequent reduser may know the differences between RedOne, REdOne MX, Epic, Scarlet, Mysterium and Monstro but those who don't frequent Reduser blend these differences into the same camera and ask questions like, 'Is your Redone an Epic?'

Best to keep the camera names and capabilities as clear as possible.

I rent my HVX-200 out all the time. I've even rented my 5D mkII out. So yes, you can rent out cheaper cameras. If you have different cameras, and different modules, you can even mix and match more. I plan on getting the fixed scarlet out of the box, and some modules. Then get a cinema, followed by an s35. By then I'll also have a RED ONE for rent as well.

You're pretty funny. But to answer the question; Yes my cameras generate rental fees everytime I take them out. I get a rate, and if my gear comes along, it gets a rate too. If I'm the DP on the gig and they want me to shoot a camera model that I already own, then I'm going to be the supplier, not a PA, and not a rental house. We may rent a backup elsewhere, but when I'm shooting my own gear I know how it has been cared for. There are fewer suprises.

Yes Stafan, it should be your ability that lands the job and justifies your pay. It isn't always so, and on those occasions you may feel like a whore, but a whore on her back is payin' the rent even when some snotty bitches are goin' hungry. ;-)

I think if you are dropping between $5k and $40k on a Red package, you are going to pretty clear about what you are buying. I would say most of the people asking those questions aren't in a position to buy any of the range.

Also, the reason people are confused is because all of the specs are not final and RED has released tidbits here and there about the specs, but for the cameras not released, they haven't solidified AND they have changed since their initial conception. That's not going to change till everything is locked down. Period.

I see Scarlet as <$10k for the brain. Outside of that, when people ask me what I shoot on, I'll say "Red Scarlet Fixed" or "Scarlet S35". If they want to know more details, I am NOT spouting off all the differences! :)

Rick,

I too must agree as the client doesn't have to be educated about the equipment I use, as the results will show.
