What's going on with the Red Rocket X card??

Theoretically, I should be getting my Dragon email shortly (well, I've been saying that for quite a while now…) but when it does come, I would certainly want to order a Rocket X card, and take advantage of the discount as an early adopter.

Is it being tweaked before final release? Does anyone have one?

We've had a RR-X for five months now, Mark .. it's out on 2 x DRAGON camera shoot at the moment with a very experienced high-end DIT .. working flawlessly and delivering day in and day out.

And yes, Rob and his team are still tweaking the firmware and drivers but if you have any serious DRAGON footage to debayer and transcode now you're going to need a RR-X card.

We rent ours out in the old Mac Pro tower with a K5000 for the GPU in Slot # 1, the RR-X in Slot #2, BMD DeckLink in Slot #3 and USB 3 card in Slot #4 ... works a charm ... if you want to test drive it, we rent the RR-X out for $99 per day and the MacPro with RCX plus Resolve for $49 per day.

For rendering out dailies on a professional level DRAGON shoot you need a RR-X ... works damn fine now and will only get better.

We also have a Rocket-X for our Dragon. We do rent it separately as well. Located in Los Angeles.

I think RED has been prioritizing delivery to existing Dragon owners as they ramp up shipments.

We got the dragon but I decided to wait on the Rocket X card. Just for preference. A NVIDIA 760 card on an old macpro (nothing special computer) renders 6k Dragon footage at about 18 fps... that card is cost around 400USD... We never really playback 6k at full resolution or such so me thinking, is it possible to get a whole stack of this Nvidia cards and render on them instead. I know it will not be as fast at the X at full potential but then on the other hand the cost will be a lot less...


and for us usually doing nothing longer than 4 minutes or so 18fps to get our DPX or proress files out is more than enough.

Hi Bjørn. What Mac Pro do you use? I have a 3.1 with a Quadro4000, but don´t think I get these speeds with 5K. Is the 760 a lot faster?
Maybe I just haven´t tried RedcineX on that machine in a while.

You need to have the GPU accelerated version of RedCineX or... well it's not GPU accelerated, and slower.

A 3.1 has bandwidth problems, and a 400 is not very fast. Maybe you'll get 8 frames per second or so.

I have a Mac GTX 570 for sale with 2.5 gisg RAM (Mac flashed version) PM me . About 2X as fast as your Quadro, and almost as fast or faster than any non-double card short of a Titan.
