  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's a good replacement for Tokina 11-16mm for full frame sensors?

My Tokina 11-16 is vignetting too much when it gets around 14-15mm on the Dragon at 5k. There's the Canon 11-24 f4 and Sigma 12-24mm f4.5 to f5.5, but they're too slow.

Any recommendations for a wide full frame lens in the 11-16mm focal length? I'm shooting with Leica R's. There's a 15mm Leica R, but it's at f3.5. I don't really want anything over 2.8. A zoom would be best.

In my experience all of the ultra wide zooms currently available out perform the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, I still have mine here.

If you want the highest quality performer for FF35, the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 is what you want.

Well, you could get the Leica 15mm/2.8 ASPH...

Ka-ching.

I'd suggest the recently released Canon 11-24 f/4L rectilinear wide angle zoom. I have been using the Duclos modded 11-16 T/2.8 Tokina in PL for 6 years, it's met my expectations and then some, but that doesn't mean I don't see the flaws. The only knock on the Canon is the f/4 max aperture, but it's significantly better optically than the Tokina. It's also a full frame lens, which means it's unlikely to vignette on anything this side of the 8K Dragon cut.

Just out of curiosity, is there, any wide angle FF lenses under 15mm that's under T2.0? Or even closer to T1.5? However expensive it is, is there anything at all with that? Would be nice to know if something like that even exists.

It's big and expensive (relative to the tokina), but the Ruby usually gets high praise. I believe it's based on the Nikon 14-24 or 12-24.

Yeah, I have my eye on the Zeiss 15mm 2.8 now. From the side-by-side comparisons I've seen online it looks great.

It’s a nice lens. I wonder how it performs compared to the Zeiss 15mm 2.8?

Nikon 14-24?

I’m not so excited about the f4.

I’m thinking the Canon 11-24 might do the job for a shoot I have coming up in 2 weeks. I was shooting with a Canon 24-70 about 2 months ago and noticed the image was darker when I zoomed into 70mm. I was thinking the Iris might be drifting, but I don’t think that’s the case. Do you notice this with the 11-24?

I highly recommend the Zeiss CZ 15-30 T2.8 if you are looking for a full frame wide angle zoom. Stellar piece of glass. Interchangeable mounts. Weapon 7.5k to 8K ready.

Thanks. I’ll check it out.

There’s also the Arri UWZ 9.5 to 18/T2.9, but it runs around $60,000: https://vimeo.com/116386105. At 10lbs I don’t think it would do that well on my Ronin.

Or you can get 20 Tamrons 15-30 for the price of the Zeiss
with Image stabilization to boot. Full frame Coverage..

Do you know if the Ruby can be mounted for Canon?

yes, there is an EF mount adapter for the RUBY 14-24 provided by focus optics. I have shot with the PL mount on RED DRAGON 6K FF and with the EF mount adapter on the RUBY 14-24 as well on a sony a7s. Please contact Stuart at Focus Optics regarding the EF adapter for the RUBY 14-24.

A question was asked about wide angles that are fast. Outside of MPs and Leica Luxs C primes I believe the current best bang for the buck is the Sigma ART 20 1.4. I'm not aware of any wider DSLR glass that's as fast.

I have not perceived any exposure ramping on the Canon 11-24 f/4L wide angle zoom, but I have not done any empirical testing.

The Canon 11-24 FF WA zoom is a bit slower than other options, presumably due to the elements required to create a rectilinear image at focal lengths that have traditionally been fisheye territory. In the past I would reserve anything wider that 16MM for shots where the distortion/altered perspective was in support of creative, otherwise I considered it a violation of the visual language expectations of the viewer. The Canon 11-24 breaks that restriction by so convincingly correcting the geometry that it can cut in with "normal" lenses pretty seamlessly.

Is the Canon 11-24 the right lens for all - of course not. That said, I would urge anyone who can rent one easily to take it out and shoot with it before buying anything else. If you peruse some of the reviews on line you'll find I am far from the only fan of this amazing achievement in optics - for a paltry (by cinema standards) $3,000 USD.
