Please, can anyone tell me, if there is other hdd that people use instead of Red Drive when shooting? And how it is connected to Red one?
I couldnt find this info here, there are lot of posts out there..
Sorry for my ignorence guys...

Thank you.

red compact flash, red ram (solid state hard drive) red drive connects with a drive cable, to the back of the mounted red drive, in the slot in the back of the camera that says DRIVE. compact flash is just slid into a compact flash module you get for the red one that screws onto the side.

Thank's Tom, But I was not clear enough, excuse me...I ment, is there another hdd that can be used instead of Red drive and how this drive is connected to Red one?
Thank you in advance.

p.s. I corrected my previous post

well red drive is just raid 0 discs, through a modified esata connection. it's all also business, still needing to make a profit but appease the customer base, and support. third party will have lower quality control, and red will not be able to offer any support for those items because they don't know how they are putting it together. first party allows them to weed out problems and troubleshoot more easily cause they designed it, they know it in and out.

Thanks a lot for your answers guys. I was hoping for another possibility though, but...you cant have both, the best camera in the world to be affordable and cheap storage..
P.S. For people in Serbia-even a red drive is an expensive item.

Thank you again

RED media is proprietary. They gotta make some $$ somewhere....

also to avoid having to troubleshoot and problems with any sub-standard third-party media.
RED ONE is geared towards Feature Film making via Digital Cinematography ... the equipment costs are the least of the Producers worry ... you can always rent, and if you do you don't want any equipment failures. The whole days shoot can be on that drive ... it must be golden!

There will always a difference between commodity media and media that's been proven to be reliable for video usage - let alone 4K usage.

But just compare a 640GB RED-DRIVE v's the pricing of other hard disk based video record solutions - for example its less than a 160GB FS100...

And RED CF cards may be at a premium over off-the-shelf CF cards, but they do record 4K without dropping frames.

Of course solid state media is re-usable too, so that makes either of these even less expensive.

You are right Stuart. Better to be sure what you work with. Now, Red drive doesnt seem so much expensive for me anymore.

Thank you.

P.S. Stuart, can you tell me how much time of video(4k raw) can you capture in Red drive?

I think you haven't understood how RED as a company works.

Reason that 3rd party media is blocked is not because RED is greedy, but because other media simply isn't fast enough.

Don't worry, I don't think RED is greedy. I know the only media that works on RED isn't proprietary. But maybe it should be. Maybe they should never have supported those 8GB Lexar CF cards in the first place. So when those 999x CF cards are announced, we don't have a bunch of people wondering if they will work. I have no problem paying a bit extra knowing that the media is fully-supported and that RED can make a little $$ to stay in business and keep making future cameras.

Anyway, this thread was about someone looking for a third-party media like the RED-DRIVE (which has proprietary firmware).

I know at least one person who would disagree with that. He has RED #8.

on a big-budget Feature Film like that, I would not want the whole days shoot on one drive.

:scared:

how much time of video(4k raw) can you capture in Red drive?

As a rule of thumb, you can say 1 minute of 4k takes about 2gig. The new drives are 640gig drives, but should only be filled to about 80%, or 500gig. So roughly 4 hours of footage. Though it is always good practice to backup often.

For more precise number, I can recommend the free iPhone app "iSee 4k", which lets you calculate those number for all media/frame sizes/frame rates.

I know if your shoots are important . Taken seriously , I would have a RED drive and another one on hand for the DIT. Keslow rents out both the data cable as well as the RED Drive. (if your in the LA area).

Complaining abut the cost of media for the RED has always amused me. I'm looking at a stack of OB-1 FlashMags on my desk. Trust me... it isn't that bad. :)
