Since Raven is just starting to ship this next week, and the pre orders are probably out the door... does it make sense to buy out of urgency a RED Epic M (used) or pre order Raven and hope for best? International project, leaving second week of April. Also with the Scarlet w is shipping, would that be more reliable to order now? What would you do if you needed a Red in that time frame?

I had an international project lined up back when I was waiting on my Epic-X to arrive, and it was touch and go. Thankfully the Red team was able to get it in my hands with a few days to spare, but there was also the added element of kitting out the camera, making sure I had the eco-system of the camera package in decent shape before I left. I think it depends on what you need out of the camera, and how well you can get the various items that surround the camera together so it can actually perform how you need it to perform. I'd be a little concerned about how solid the firmware and hardware is performing on these brand new cameras, whereas an Epic will be a mature camera platform at this point, more of a sure thing. But it also comes down to how much you're looking to spend, what the used package includes, and what, if any, are the concessions you'd be making by going with the older tech vs the new. In theory you could always turn around and sell the Epic after this project is complete, and despite the newer tech being out, I don't think that means the Epic will be giving you a significantly lesser image quality. You may also be working with better framerate options at given resolutions.

Tough call. Good luck!

I appreciate the response, I think you summed that up very well. I believe the Epic would be a great investment for the trip and that it can be my "B" camera if I plan to purchase again in near future. I need something that is a for sure outcome and hoping Red can get me what I need in time seems like a lot to ask for especially with them pushing out new products. As well as being prepared for anything overseas that can happen. I need to have my kit dialed in.

Thanks Clint!

If you don't even have a RED system yet (and this is coming from a non-RED owner) that seems like a huge risk. Besides everything mentioned above, time for yourself to get even just basically familiar with the camera systems and workflow, etc. And what will you do if its SUPPOSE to be there in time and then you find out it slips with a week to spare? And that's of course assuming the RAVEN is stable right out the door.

Could all be a non issue of course... then again, it could be a huge issue ;)

If the RAVEN is really what you want then I'ld buy it but there's basically no way you are getting it in April. Allocations are going to be a few dozen per week until the first or second week of April, and that won't even scratch the surface of the RAVEN queue. Scarlet-W is in the same boat. Even if you order now, you won't see it for a while.

If you need a RED I suggest renting or buying a pre-owned like Epic M.

I agree with Daniel Cegla. I ordered the RAVEN for a new project too, also becoming a first timer in RED, but my production is not as time sensitive and I have about 2 months buffer. Time enough to get acquainted with the camera and all possible hickups with the new video files to work fine in Premiere or other editing tools to be solved. With your short timeframe it might make sense to be on the safe side.

I also agree with the comments above. I ordered a Scarlet-w on Feb 11 and from talking to my rep I am hoping to get it mid to end of May.

Just order it, most likely you have it in time. And if you don't get it you can always rent to start with or even buy an old scarlet or such. Those goes for pennys now and if you make sure to get accessories that are some what back compatible you can use those when / if you get your delayed raven.

Also there is a chance if the raven is delayed you could possibly sell yours when it finally arrives at a prime price as simply then supply is smaller than demand in the red web shop.
