Hey guys,
I've been searching a while but can't seem to find any information or reports anywhere.

I am currently buying a RED Scarlet and was wondering what do I have to do if the Camera was reported stolen by RED ?
I can check mine and send it back if something is wrong and get my money back.
But shouldn't I report it to RED?, and what if I report it, what happens then?

I send it to RED -> loose my money because i didn't retrieved it to the owner -> pay for shipping and get an email with Thank you?
I send it to RED -> loose the money -> RED can somehow make me keep it (sounds to magical to be real)?
Say nothing -> send it back to the owner -> get my money back?

I really want to be a good person, but loosing loads of money isn't worth it...

My camera is arriving the next days, keeping fingers crossed to not having to test it on my own...

Cheers
Filipe

Just a quick thought... how about checking the serial number with RED when the camera arrive. If stolen, send camera back to owner and report to RED and the police.

If I were you and it turns out the camera is stolen, I'd be as worried that they are going to try to steal your money, too, without giving you the camera.

You might want to reconsider whether this whole thing is really worth it for you.

also if you used paypal, they have some good buyer protection. They will make it work if you find out its stolen.

Check out the serial number with Red BEFORE you agree to a purchase. They can tell you who the owner should be. If that is not whomyounare buying from, be VERY suspicious.

+1

What makes you suspicious? Why didn't you get the serial number first?

if you suspect its stolen, maybe it doesn't even show and its a brick in a box? escrow or paypal is relatively safe way to do this... if its stolen and theres a paper trail I'm sure you won't lose in the end, they have ways and means to track people unless you pay in an non secure way (cash in a brown bag, stuff like that)

Yeah. I always thought there should be a thread, discussion, or 1 list of stolen cameras (Scarlet/Epic/One) and serial numbers on Reduser.net. That way we can all check when one is on sale. Sure that it's a lot of work to maintain and keep up to date but it would be good to have.

What do ya know! That should be a stickie on somewhere in the forum. Would come in handy!

Also remember that if you suspect / know that the camera is stolen, you yourself could be in some legal trouble. There are a few laws covering the issue of 'handling stolen goods' (at least here in the uk).
Do yourself a huge favour and protect yourself.. if it's stolen the 'right thing' may cost you some money (unless Paypal or the grateful original owner steps up with some assistance), but in the long run it's better that than a criminal record.

Your post Sounds really dumb to me honestly, but you seem like an intelligent individual, Why didn't you just post the serial number and the name of the seller on here. In less than a day you will probably get the background info the seller. Reduser.net has a wide coverage across the globe, owners know other owners or renters. Or simply just google equipment stolen with the serial number. you'll be surprised as to what pops up.

The words you meant to write are "lose" and "losing"

not "loose" and "loosing"

You "lose" your wallet.

You "loose" your necktie.

Sorry for my semantic pet peeve.

That's good to hear. Do you have any first hand experience getting your money back?

PayPal has saved my ass on several occasions. It is always a stressful situation that could of been avoided by following the advice of "if it's too good to be true..."

What I have learned is that fantastic communication, willingness to bend over backwards as a seller to show good faith and integrity is important. In addition, writing up a legal binding contract and putting your credibility on the line is worth it's weight in good in my opinion. But there are many out there that could care less about that even over a few hundred bucks. Do your homework & look into the individual's background as a seller or buyer on Reduser and eBay, etc. Also if they own and operate a legit business this adds credibility, but I was taken once on following that idea along with IMDB big network credits. The world is a cruel place. Always be skeptical and think it's probably too good to be true. Make that seller work his/her ass off to prove they are legit and worth your hard earned money!

Knowingly receiving stolen property is a felony on most states. Knowingly concealing stolen property is equally illegal. If you have doubts, contact Red first. If you've already purchased it - contact Red, Paypal, the local police and provide all the information.

I believe there's a database of serial numbers for stolen cameras, which means that if anyone tries to sell it and the buyer checks the list they're gonna get caught or at least the buyer won't loose their money. Don't know where the list is though.

It might be easier to use the RED ownership transfer system. Have the seller send the camera to Red for inspection and diagnostics. If everything is good, then you complete the purchase and ownership transfer.
