Now that EPIC is 1080 out... I'm curious what people like
for a 1080P

1. Onboard Monitor (Panasonic BT LH80 was awesome for focus and bummer its not supported as its 720P) (Will be selling mine shortly)
2. What 17 to 24" Field Monitor are you using that replaces the 720P Panny 1710? (Ill be selling both of these shortly)

thanks in advance.

My pampered and three old Panny 1760 committed suicide and needed a panel replacement. Wasn't too keen on another Panasonic. Looked at the Sony 17" OLED and it was light years ahead in picture quality and amazingly cost competitive. Great monitor for impressing clients but you have to be careful as it represents especially the shadows better than anything anyone else will be viewing your pictures on.

Flanders Scientific makes nice monitors at a good price.

Packaged with a mount, bag, screen protection and shade... cant beat it.

Onboard monitor wich I actually use for the director is the TVlogic VFM-056W with Canon batt plate (or D-Tap on V-lock battery when mounted rear the camera with a little israeli arm).

The LH80 still works on Epic w 3.0 update and frankly you can't tell the difference under typical field conditions. We have Flanders, panny, DP6 and TVLogic monitors, and the LH80 is still the top choice for assistants.

As far as 17" monitors go, unless your in a tent with a real color solution, the panny is still the best workhorse made.

I really like the Flanders, but for daily service under typical brutal conditions of a set, nothing beats a Panasonic 1710. Who is actually using a monitor on set to judge color?

1. I love my Astro 8"... Rock solid imagery for 8 years straight. TV Logic 5.6 is great also.

Well, if weight is not an issue... 1,5 kg / 3,3 lbs

Just bought a 17" Sony PVM1741 OLED monitor... when my Epic-X arrives will report back on performance. But it's been getting good reviews.

I love the Sony PVM1741 OLED monitor with my scarlet. Works great, even outdoors.
Cheers,
Sam

FSI 2140W works great with my two Scarlets.

The problem with the Sony OLEDs is the flicker, drives me bat-shit crazy! Other than that they Have wonderful blacks.
I've gone with the new Marshal 17", it has a real 1080P res and is super thin and light, good color too, blacks aren't as good as the OLEDs but it is 1/2 the price and runs for 3 hours on a 98w battery.

thanks for all the feedback guys. Greg I can't get an image on my BT 1710 OR my LH80 with an EPIC

Im not really looking for color critical on set (in fact we prefer that the image look better in post not on set for psychological reasons)

Im just curious about 1080 monitoring options for the EPIC in terms of rugged field and onboard monitors - the 1710 are brutes and while heavy the LH80 is beloved for pulling focus. Plus as Greg pointed out. if you rent you gear to AC's they are very persnickety - and quite set in their ways. :)

Perhaps Im doing something wrong and will call said crusty AC down to the studio to get these 1710 displaying an image for me... haha

LH80 requires you to put Epic in 720 SDI out

Not sure what your issue is w 1710, works fine here in 1080 or 720

The LH80 actually supports. 1080, but only psf, which is not supported on Red cameras for some reason

Regarding 720 vs 1080 on a 7" screen, there is no way you can tell the difference in the field

Flanders!!!

I hear Flanders will be showing a new 17" at NAB that will replace the discontinued 17". Hopefully shipping soon. I need more 17" monitors. The Flanders 21" & 23" are also great and the 24" is awesome, but overkill for set in my opinion.

The Marshall 17" is pretty nice and the TV Logic 17" or 24" quad is great for multiple cameras. 2 pictures and 2 waveform on one screen with no overlap is great.

We use the Small HD for AC. Since they got the new focus assist upgrade, it really has become our AC's fave. Small, light and the best hood system on the market. For larger monitor, we replaced our trusty Panny 1710 with the new 21" Flanders. The Flanders is absolutely amazing. It's full 1080p. No green bias like our Panasonic. Much sharper and travels in a lazer cut foam pelican case that's actually smaller than our Panasonic's case. It's much lighter than the Panny 17" as well. Their hood system could be better though. Price is great. Flanders in fact has fazed out their 17" in favor of the 21".
