  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What RED article would you like to see?

So...

I am considering finnishing one more article before I delve into another insane on-set period...

But I cannot really make up my mind on which subject to choose.

I cannot - of course - write about "anything", but what is the article/discussion you'd really like to see?

Here are some suggestions, and my thoughts on "why not"... :coolgleamA:

1. Keeping all latitude available from set to post on a RED workflow
Have been discussing it lightly here earlier, but RED could easilly just update their firmware and gamma-curves for on-set monitoring and it would have a rather short shelf life...

2. RED worflows on the cheap
That would include the FCS suite, and THAT might get updated at NAB...
OTOH I guess it won't get released at NAB

We're going all Resolve these days for Online, but it's a matter of fact that not all can do that, and there's still a vast oportunity to work RED cheaply with free/cheap tools.

3. Storm vs Clipfinder / RCX
This should have been obvious, but it seems to me that these are not really competing workflows, more like alternate workflows for different scenarios.

But then again, maybe there are alternate articles which I may (or of course: May not) have

And finally:
I don't promise I'll get it finnished, but still the question is:
What is the RED-workflow/signalchain related issue you would MOST like to see discussed?

Cheers!

Gunleik,
Great articles so far. Really enjoying them.

I would go for the RED Workflows on the cheap, or low budget. I think with the number of people here who are looking at EPIC-S and Scarlett, this might appeal to some. Okay FCP might change (or it might not!) but even if you did cheaper workflows that work, you'll have a followup article when the new FCP does come out!

Just my 2 cents worth.

Other thoughts:

- Minimal RED shooting kits
- wireless workflows for onset (iPad + Teradek)
- FCP & Color

Will think up a few others :-)

Thanks my friend.

+1 on FCP - as it seems so many want their own post-pipeline, and the question gets asked here and elsewhere a lot.

Although part of me can't believe Apple won't at least preview the new FCS for NAB, I'm starting to wonder if there's time now. I suppose a last minute announcement would get them plenty of coverage...

+2 on FCP workflow. Your expertise on workflow is mightily appreciated. Specifically covering the workflow for and independent feature from acquisition through editing, color correcting and finishing for festival entry, and then following on to deliverables for distribution once it is picked up.

Thanks, Gunleik, for all your generosity.

Ok... Thanks...

That is actually a series of smaller articles...

I guess I could start there.

First thing up will be something I dropped off another article:
DRX workarounds when using Rocket...

Thanks for the suggestions. I am open to more!

I like this idea. Perhaps an explanation of which workflow is best suited to which type of scenario could be included.

This is the one I'd like to see. It seems to me that FCP is a waste of time with a looming upgrade that is likely to change much of that workflow. Storm is a very interesting new tool that is great by itself, but not always easy to get into a workflow.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi.

I think I'll wait a couple of point-updates before I do a writeup of Storm.
It is a fun and promising app, but it is still moving very fast. I want to wait and see what it settles as.

As it is, it is a great one-stop application for RED workflows. As Ted said: RCX on steroids. The thing we all wished the original Redcine to be back in the day.

But it still has a lot of unrealised potential and promises, and I think it would be a waste of time and probably a bit unfair to write a thorough workflow based review on Storm just yet.

I will finnish a piece on alternate approach when needing DRX but you use a Rocket today, though.

As to FCS, I really like that idea. It is so usefull to so many. And as Mark Toia http://reduser.net/forum/member.php?7012-Mark-Toia has showed many, many times, it is a bit underregarded these days.
If you use that tool well, it is not really much stopping you. Look up his posts on the subject and look at his exmples and be convinced!

And he's doing it in the simplest and most straightforeward way imagineable:

Prores transcodes used for offline and online.
Simple.

I am not saying that you cannot get a bit more out of going a bit more complicated, but with his approach you get 80% of the potential with 10% of the effort. If you can make that work well, then it might be a good idea to look further. Main point is to learn working with the RAW files, which no workflow writeup can teach you, just experience and testing signalchains can learn you that.

I'll hang on and see what happens at NAB, though. If the release of a new FCS is still some months ahead, that seems like the way to go.

Keep the suggestions comming, though!

Cheers
