What needs to be damaged for an R3D file to report as "offline" in Redcine-X?

I'm just trying to understand the file structure a bit more, like where is the threshold of damage between a corrupt frame and a totally offline file? Damage to/incomplete writing of the file header?

Any reading material from the SDK perhaps?

It's a variant of JPEG2000 compression, so I would read up on that. The problem with dealing with any kind of compressed file format is that it can quickly turn into a house of cards: a few hundred bytes of bad data could ripple through several seconds of material and cause big chunks of missing picture. This is true for all kinds of compressed files, including QuickTime, Avid DNxHD, and many others, so it's not a Red problem per se.

Marc, I think deep file damage would be a given. What I'm more curious is how can Redcine instantly scan files and decide if it's offline? It must either just be checking certain areas of the file or doing a random sampling while in the process of generating a thumbnail.

Hi Angelo, do you solve your files OFFLINE problem? I am facing the same problem today. very costly and painful experience. Can we trust the system?

I am having the same issue. I formatted the card before shooting and then when I pulled the files up in Redcine X 5 of 6 clips work but one says OFFLINE

I am having the same problem. Some of file are offline in Redcine, but is still possible to play them on camera. Is it possible to cure this r3d?

I had the issue when used prerec a few builds back...then it was a little temp file of (as I remember 7kb) in the r3d folders for the "broken clips" that was not supposed to be there. The clips could playback in camera but not on the computer, they showed up as offline both when copied and straight from the card. Then after removing these little files everything worked as should.
The whole thing was a bit scary as the camera was out shooting and they where running out of mags, and it was a sunday... first thing monday morning I called red and they know the issue and told me to remove the these files. So look into the folders of the offline clips and see if there is anything unusual.
