So now that all the news has come in from NAB 2010, what lenses will you, the members of RedUser, buy?

Price, compact size and speed are my main concerns.

I still have a lot of hope for the Illumina's, however communication does not seem to be their strong suit. Are they even released? Fingers crossed.

Zeiss Compact primes II were so close, but the 18mm killed the deal for me.

The Uniq Razors look terrific but it looks like you will need Canon-to-PL adaptors in order to use them on a PL mount Red / Epic. Also their marketing as the '7D prime set' might lower their value in the rental world. It would be very interesting to see how the Razors compare optically and mechanically to the Uniq Signature series. I think I'd buy the Razors right now if they came in a PL mount.

Here, here Zakaree; all this bland, plastic, digital footage is giving me an ulcer. Bring back the character!

"I LOVE panchros"

as my new sign off..

cooke panchros.. baltars. zeiss standards..

those are my favs.. looking at lomos.. havent reallty seen footage yet from them..
but hopefully that have same organic feel too them.

I just feel like all the new lenses are just edge to edge sharp as hell.. and really no color definition (which isnt a bigggg deal because you can do that in post)

but there is just something about seeing an organic looking image on the monitor while on set.. the whole fix it in post thing irritates me.

haha, do people ask you that a lot?

I REALLY love the look of Lomo anamorphics. Their focus falloff towards the edges are really nice, they have an awesome vintage look to them. I'm hoping to shoot my next feature with them. Plus you can find decent used sets for about $20k. I'll be really interested though with how the Red Anamorphics turn out. I hope they don't do away with too many of the visual attributes of anamorphics.

zakaree the old speed panchros are ubercool....
sexy as hell...
some asshole did steal my whole set, this day i almost started to cry.
they are relative fast with T2.1
i prefer the speed panchros over the zeiss standards,
i especially liked the 75....rumours say it was radioactive, so the yellow shift hehe.

man do i miss these lenses.

i was so happy to hear about the new panchros, but when i realised they crippled them to T2.8 i just wished back my old panchros.
the 18 mm doesnt really cover the full sensor, but with these its not about resolution.

i am looking for the New RED short zoom (i am eagerly waiting to understand how i can fit a LMB5 onto the lens)

Almost definitely an Arri/Fuji Alura 45-250mm T2.6
Still toying with the idea of a pair of Optimo Rouges but I'd have to sell my sizable Standard speed set. If I won the lottery I'd buy a set of Leica primes in a heartbeat.

with lottery thing i would take cooke s5 lenses and a cxx shortzoom plus some lighter lenses

Is there a such thing as an affordable (under 3k) old-school anamorphic zoom one could buy and possible use on the Epic-X S35? I doubt they will cover the FF35.

I'm still pulled by the lure of Cooke Panchros. If they were a 1/2 stop faster I'd have already placed an order. And then I tell myself that heck, 95% of the time I am shooting to a T4, so whats the problem? Their size it right, the price is OK, matching image quality with S4s is awesome, build quality rocks, name recognition for agency work check, plenty sharp, gorgeous image. Two things are hanging me back. Speed and I haven't shot with them yet, nor know anyone who has. hmmmm

Red Pro Primes are too big for me. I like to whip the camera off sticks and grab handheld shots and stuff the camera in the footwell of the passenger seat to shoot up at the driver. Size matters. Balance matters.

Ultra Primes would be perfect but out of price range.

hmmm. dilemmas

like the lottery idea though. maybe I'll have to buy a ticket this week?

The weight of the Zeiss CP2's makes them very appealing. Maybe a three lens set of those: 85mm, 50mm, 28mm.

And then a Duclos Lenses 11mm-16mm zoom to round it out.

That's four lenses that would pack light and cover a LOT of situations.

I'm curious about the new Schneiders, but there's not much info out yet.
EDIT: Found some info HERE.

RED FF35 Electronic lenses with programmable OLED markings and the RED Electronic Mount.

The RED Electronic lenses are only compatible with the Electronic RED Mount. This proprietary RED Mount has a custom flange depth.

The RED Electronic FF lenses are designed with motion tracking and motion recording as a foundation however, so the performance of those lenses in both motor speed, lens noise, breathing, etc. will far exceed other electronic lenses on the market.

Hi Curran. What's VC?

Also, do you think it will be possible (for Red) to create a PL electronic lens by hacking the /i pins for lens control? I love the sound of these electronic lens, but I think a lot of people will be reluctant to switch mounts after investing so much in PL glass. It would be amazing if they came up with a PL solution. Just thinking aloud.

Vibration Control I think. Some sort of stabilization to compensate for vibration.

I don't want to get into discussion about any "hacking" of /i pins for lens control after what happened with Birger. I only have the Red 18-50 zoom at the moment which is one reason I can't wait for these new Red lenses to become available. I am confident that these new lenses will be just what I need especially when moving to FF35 Epic.
