Hi All,

Just a curious question. What lenses do you use on your RED Camera?

Best

Yuri Kawana

Mostly still glass from

Canon FD, Angenieux FD, Leica M, Leica R, Nikon F manual, Contax/Yashica and some PL cine glass.

Test footage>>>

I use the following

Nikon 14-24 f/2.8
Zeiss ZF 28 f/2.0
Zeiss ZF 35 f/2.0
Zeiss ZF 50 f/1.4
Zeiss ZF 85 f/1.4
Zeiss ZF 70-200 f/2.8

They work wonderfully. I just shot a feature with them, and they are amazing.

Are these still lenses? are they converted to cine?

I use a mix match of set of Zeiss lenses

10mm 2.1
28mm 2.1
65mm 1.3 (super speed)
100mm 2.1

I also use the Red 18-50 (great compact lens, not great at T3)

Nikon 200 T2.0 (pL converted)

Canon 150-600 Century converted.

Thats my strange little kit. They don't match well but I don't need them to in my line of work. If I did I'd rent.

Sad story is, 2 1/2 years ago I sold a set of Super Speeds for $7500. When I thought my 35 days were done. I am still sick about it.

Are these still lenses? are they converted to cine?-----well, that's all the still lens use with Nikon Mount I guess!

Use available RED glass -

Shawn,

RED PL glass is OK, nice and affordable if you are shooting in a kind of "controllable" environment, a real production with lighting, sound, crew and cast...

but for a kind of "uncontrollable" environment where you mostly do not have anything, no lighting, only available light the RED glass is simply too slow.

Hi, Sanjin. I've seen the Canon test footage. Awesome.
Can you tell me something about the follow focus (if used), please?

Thank you

Gian Paolo

Gian Paolo,

I do have an old DV REDROCK Micro FF (it cannot impress professionals) and using it from time to time

but I shoot now mostly without FF because just customizing my lightweight hand-held RED rig.

In the future maybe to get one of advanced FF systems starting with View Factor system, via Preston to Cmotion.

Yes the ZFs are Nikon mount. Use the Red Nikon adapter and you are away.

Until now I've been using the Red 18-50. Good, but as Sanjin says, too slow and somewhat limiting. I need more focal lengths and faster lenses so I decided to get the Zeiss ZFs.

They are fantastic!

I got them from Duclos Lenses (www.ducloslenses.com) who projector-checked them (they rejected one) then declick the iris and put FF gears as well as an 80mm front ring.

Well worth the few extra bucks compared to the raw lens.

Just the tech check itself was worth it as I plan to use these lenses for a long time.

Seriously, for $5k-$6k you can get a full set of nice fast primes and they are gorgeous.

I would love Master Primes but I'm not shelling out $150k...

I know, was just saying I used them.

Z-primes stop inconsistency a problem?

Z-primes stop inconsistency a problem?

How problematic is the fact that the z primes are all different speed wide open(18mm f3.5, 21mm f2.8, 35mm f2, etc.)? Would the extra lighting setup for different lenses be a big problem?
What do the working cameramen think?

I find Ultra Primes to be a perfect fit for Red if you like primes. They seem to match very well. They are easy to maintain, reliable and a good size.

I have tried the Optimo DP 30-80 zoom and it seems terrific.

Apart from standard speeds portholing and obvious ergonomic considerations most lens seem to work as you may expect.

PS There is 'some' evidence that telecentric and colder lenses have the edge with Red

All Leica for primes.
Leica primes are VanDeimen PL mount conversions.
24-T3
28-T3
35-T1.6
50-T1.6
80-T1.6
60 macro - T3
100 macro - T3
135 macro - T3

I also have the Red 18-50,which is OK for handheld quick and dirty use.

Depends on the budget and situation.
Generally, either S4s or Mark III Zeiss Superspeeds.
For zooms, Optimo 24-290 or Angie HR, as well as the S4 zoom and the Cooke 18-100.
Cheers,
Harry

Jacek,
I have the 25,35,50,85 and 100mm zeiss zf set and find them to be fantastic lenses, it would be nice if they were faster ( thats what's holding me back from the 18mm at the moment). The fact that they are different speeds wide open doesn't bother me that much as you soon learn to either light the set to the stop of your slower lens or chose the lens for the stop that you are forced to shoot with. These are the limitations that we deal with in getting a $6k set of lenses.
I also wish that someone would make a nikon mount for the red that didn't use the cheap metal mount but rather like the one that comes with the nikon camera itself.
I also have a set of superspeed Lomos that just came back from service and I'm looking forward to trying them out on a job but the zeiss's are sharp and light and really well built.

Shane.
