  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is the next step from RED after pricefall on Epic! Or how to catch the progress!

What with Alexa? I think it cost around 70K and you will not find Alexa for 35K it is good investments I think it is top camera and with big demand on the market and with big price for the rental you can return you money I think with Alexa

alexa has higher resale because it much more of a limited market product....i would not want an alexa....not for 25K....it requires a completely different way of shooting, team, crew....anyone who has ever shot with a video camera or even a mamiya, hasselblad,...can pick up an epic and start shooting....that is the revolution....and that is why RED will be able to make these cameras cheaper and cheaper, because their market is getting bigger and bigger.....you won't see too many scater videos or sports shorts, even docus shot on alexa....way too much camera.....anyone coming from DSLR will be right at home with epic (or scarlet)

Production Insurance and shooting in high risk locations? The OCean, rivers, frozen lakes... not suggesting insurance fraud but you might get lucky and fall thru the ice with your camera :P

I don't know... that stuff that comes in a box is pretty cheap. ;)

You mean boxes like this?

Have you ever shot with an Alexa at all ? Doesn't sound like it.
Apart from size it is as easy to use, and frankly, even easier, than Alexa.
Ask any operator, AC, whatever, I've yet to meet an intelligent person praising operation of a Red (no matter which model) over the ease of an Alexa.

Wait a few months...

yes, the price for alexa's will fall heavily but not as hard and quick I think...
The way the alexa is built made it choosen by the film and advertising crews and now when they move on to alexa studio and other more expansive gear the TV stations will go for the old alexas... Why? because they are more simple to use then the red cameras. Do not take me wrong I love the epic for what it does but if I was just to shoot a weekly TV show that was to be finished in HD I would choose an old used alexa straight away.

If the epic could record redfilmlog HD straight to the SSD with no other modules needed, then I think Arri would have been in big trouble. As it is now without even the Toia Module Red are loosing quite a big amount of clients, and the clients that uses red does the same.

So please RED as soon as you finished the meizler get your guys together and make a small proress module, Preferably something that replace the not so functional... module adapter. Make sure to make it low cost and if needed leave the +1 monitor out and or sound out... Basically a Samurai that fits on the back of the camera like the redmote, no cables or extra power needed.

Totally agree. With just the camera and the lens, it pretty much operates like an ENG camera, just throw it on your shoulder, very easy to operate. Also don't forget ProRes or DNxHD, it makes the workflow extremely easy.

The time for the Toia module is gone. With the price drop in the EPIC, the Meizler needs to come down in price and become a standard part of the EPIC. Its the only option that'll make sense now. Otherwise, IMHO, RED will be bringing a slingshot to a gunfight.

Maybe you are right But at the moment it cost more than the scarlet... and Im afraid that what it does should atleast for some time forward be around that price. The wireless video and audio and all the focus motor stuff does not come for free.. however process recorders are not that costly so to make such thing that connects to the pinouts of the camera body can not be space sciences.

There is only one "safe" bet with the Epic. Believe in yourself, use your camera to make your dreams come true.

As Jim said, this is the best investment you could make in yourself. That's why were in it right? That's why Jim opened the doors for us?

Er... I've shot with Alexa a shit ton. Have almost bought one more than once. Yes, they are easy to use, configure, etc.. No arguments there. What I find amusing is how many people claim RED is difficult or unintuitive to work with. RED cameras are stupid simple to use as well. And doubly so once you learn a few of the little helpful tips and tricks about properly exposing for RAW workflow. All of which is easily referenced from RED's web site these days. RED is only more difficult because people believe it to be and/or want it to be due to their own ill conceived notions or industry politics clouding the issue. Personally I prefer operating an EPIC over an Alexa. I find it to be more intuitive in several ways, but not perfect. Alexa does have some niceties and advantages of its own.

I'm not alone in this... But apparently myself and several others here on these forums who shoot with both RED and Alexa must not be the intelligent type.

Agree with all Jeff says... :) Except for buying an Alexa.

Alexa is better at appearing simple, because you don't get all the options "in your face". Changing to highspeed on an alexa is rather tedious in comparison to just dialling in your new framerate. Add a codex for RAW and they prefer a "certified codex operator".

The main difference, though, is how they are built to be "out of the box" ready to shoot. The whole Alexa program is built to give the feeling of simplicity.
Even when it is really not.
And the marketeers have been working that song pretty notoriously! :)

Which has been smart.

I *almost* bought an Alexa only because of how many times I was supplying equipment to a production and often everything but the camera. I don't rent anymore, so it's no longer a consideration. ;)

disagree on the grounds that having a smaller module is advantageous to shooting style, not just the degree of functionality. keeping cameras small has its own advantages. the proof will be in the pudding. they'll sell tons of smaller, cheaper modules, with the number of cameras already in the field.

but I get the sentiment - cost of the Meizler appears disproportionate to the cameras....

these are psychological games we play with ourselves, however. we either need/want it enough to buy it. or we don't.
