  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What is "lost" when a sensor is not deemed Epic worthy?

I have to ask:

Where the hell are you getting this stuff????????

David

you dont need to get ideas from anywhere? ..but in the original epic specs (way back), which have changed, called the "x" sensors "select", whereas the s35 epic (non x model) had non select versions?.. why don't you guess what it means? .. are the scarlet processing chips not the same as the epics? ..just not the ones with the lesst resistence (higher hz ones) that didn't make it to epic? .. just a response to a post, sorry you get confused

The Nov 2008 announcement did say that Epic-Xs get "Select Sensors" over their normal Epic brethren. That was the last time I think that was mentioned.

Ultimately it doesn't matter what was the source of the screw-up, just that Graeme has set it straight. If this thread were just allowed to die then that too would help put it to bed. :-)

So Graeme, are you saying the sensors in Epic are exactly the same as the sensors in Scarlet, and that they would pass the same QC tests if all else was the same? That the ONLY difference is the data rate? If I were to do a noise test on Epic and Scarlet, the results would be the same consistently through multiple cameras?

As I said above, it's the ACICs that are lower-speed rated, the image sensors are the same.

Graeme

Thanks, I appreciate the clarification. Side note, have you seen any noise tests between the Scarlet and the C300 yet?

No, I've not personally seen anything on C300 yet - I do want to measure it, so if anyone wants to loan me on for a few hours....

Graeme

Why are some people hearing that sensors that didn't pass QC for Epic are being used for Scarlet? Is there no truth to that?

Yes, let's eliminate that rumor early and often. That type of negative press dies hard and is difficult to expel.

Can people test the redcode limit settings of the Scarlet-X on the Epic now if they have it to get an idea of what the compression will be like?

I can tell you exactly where that little nugget of misinformation came from. It's those boys over in the GH2 hack forum, talking about hacking the Scarlet, and how the Scarlet has sensors that didn't pass spec, and they also mention that the Scarlet is nothing like the EPIC, they just put weights in the body of the camera to make it weigh the same.

I read quite a while ago that the Epic has 2 ASICs, and that the Scarlet would only have 1 ASIC.
Does this still hold true?
If so, it would easily explain the difference in performance given the same quality of parts.

It would also explain the cost difference.

More likely it has 1/Nth of a ASIC (lower clock speed). Performance wise it has less thoroughput than even the 3k Scarlet.
