Hey -

Can we get an update from some of those lucky RED owners on what has shipped/what features are enabled? For example ...

Any updates on REDCine?

What about the EVF? Especially compared to the LCD...

Are we closer to getting audio?

Any news on 2k windowed?

Also, a sticky version of this that is kept up to date would be a welcome addition indeed!

I think whats more important to list is what is *NOT* working.

The biggies are:

No audio

No playback

No simultaneous output

Things on the horizon which you have seen Jim discuss are:

2k windowed up to 80fps
Variable frame rates
Time Lapse
In camera speed ramps

4k 16:9 (right now we only have 4k 2:1)

In camera monitoring such as focus assist, waveforms, and histograms

Quicktime proxies being generated in camera

The above features are in testing and have been discussed by the RED team to appear in the next firmware build.

As for REDCINE, it has not been released in any sort of beta form to all reservation holders.

4k 16:9 (right now we only have 4k 2:1)

Anyone know if there will be an option to keep 4k 2:1 if desired? Not sure I would want to, but if it's just a firmware change, why not make it optional?

4k 2:1 is here to stay, don't worry, Jim even had a mind to make it a future industry standard.

Emmanuel

As an engineer, I'm a firm believer in no artificial deadlines. I think it would ultimately help people more if that schedule would disappear and have Jim just ship the cameras when they are ready, at whatever pace they can manage with high QC.

Shawn, I really like the way you think. Too bad more people aren't as logical.

Shawn, they're not "artificial deadlines", there target dates to help business people plan and prepare for a significant investment in a powerful tool, and are necessary for many reasons.....

One being managing the large amount of cash required for purchase.... for many of us, that takes planning. It's not like we can just charge it to a CC when they call. People don't want to pull 40 or 50K out of there high yield accounts and park that money in there business checking account indefinitely. Most business checking accounts don't pay any interest at all.

And there's all the support equipment and business preparation, etc .....

Target dates are a good thing.

As an engineer, I'm a firm believer in no artificial deadlines.

As a manager responsible for teams of engineers, developers etc, it's my job to hit REAL deadlines, budgets & quality!

Typically, engineers (& developers) have a reduced sense of budget or time except when their pay is short or late! Business knows that and pays people like myself to ensure it comes in on time, budget & at the quality they want. And then there's the thing of managing client/customers expectations...which engineers & developers seem to also have a reduced empathy. The usual thing they do have is a dedication to quality, which is great but in the real world, resources like costs, time & quality are not infinite and therefore needs tempering...and I love it........you have these confines and have to work WITHIN not without these limits. Engineers like customers (us) sometimes don't realise all of this...nothing is limitless and as a development team you have to make time, quality, cost calls all the time.

NO WAY should this thread infer/talk about Red's SDLC process as we're on the outside and can only bring up the boring after the event wisdoms.

Cheers,
Dave

Rob,

Thanks for all the clarity. This was originally posted out of a suggestion to make this kind of information a sticky because many of the posts ask to answer these specific questions.

I certainly never intended to post incorrect information and I formally asked to have this as a sticky. When I re-posted this I was hoping someone from RED would correct it all and you did. I really appreciate it.

I do not want to piss anyone off and if this information is not useful to anyone but me or if there are reasons this is a bad idea please just PM me or delete the post.

here is an updated list with your corrected information Please let me know if it is alright to post this or if I have broken some protocol.

Thanks,
David

battistella, I didn't get the sense that Rob was using a tone of admonishment, but was simply efficiently laying out where things stand. Thanks for triggering this update, as it helps all who are interested.

edit: everytime I see one of these software/firmware type updates, I marvel at what has been done on that side of the RED experience as much as the hardware portion. This is so intriguing to watch unfold.

me too.

I am just sensitive to this stuff and I am cautious to be factual and hopefully provide useful information. I think that clear posts like this can reduce some "noise" and give people a place to point to for clarity.

It can help everybody. My camera is in the 700's (my business partners name is on the actual reservation) and I like to keep track of what is going on so that I am up to speed and I can anticipate things.

I am blown away by this team and the distance they have traveled and, in my dorky way, just trying to help.

David

Yeah, you pissed me off big time.... KIDDING! Everything is cool, just wanted to limit the amount of incorrect information floating about. Sometimes people can get really excited about some information that isn't accurate / correct :)

Just wanted to make sure it was very clear where we are. I read your list as "this is how it is".... maybe you meant to have some question marks in there?

Anyway, everything's cool!

This is EXACTLY why Red should make a WEB PAGE on their website that lists all features and SPECS and status (enabled, under development, beta testing, changed, etc.) and keep updating. Estimated ETA would be great as well - and Red could keep changing it as needed.

That would reduce confusion and MIS-INFORMATION - seems like there is a bit of that out there -

This is good. At least now we know exactly where we are on several fronts, today.

Agreed.....!!!

Get a couple of those loafers...jannard, nattress etc...onto a bit of web scripting...they were the buggers that started it all!
