  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

WHAT IF RED MADE HI ISO / HI SPEED / HI RES cameras ?

If love to see Red with these options Toia, just not sure they have the ability to stretch themselves in all these directions at the same time to effectively deliver in a timely manner. Just a simple fact that Red is awesome because they aren't Sony and Canon. But at the same token i know they have prototypes and R&D working on some cool stuff so maybe it isn't super far fetched.

As far as RED cameras not being "flawless" out the gate. To that I say if you want the latest and greatest technology pushing the industry into uncharted territories there will be some bumps along the way. I am simply drawn toward maverick companies like RED and their kick ass technology. We are maverick customers ;)
 
I hate to even chime in since I'm part of such a tiny market, but for us folks in natural history a combination of high ISO and high-frame rates (that compete with Phantom) would make for the ultimate camera in my book. Like shooting fireflies in slow motion :)
 
I get stuck in many different situations, with many different requests... Having one camera that does all would be great !
Having 3 different cameras purpose built for either speed or light sensitivity or resolution works for me. Even better if they are identical and all my of accessories slip from one to the next.

HS camera wouldn't mean also a high ISO camera?

Maybe a 5k HS camera with 1000fps, with high ISO would solved the problem, 1 instead of 2...

Actually Adam you can add us action sport shooter to that list.. shooting a magical surf session at dawn 3200iso 120fps or more is a challenge.

Mark, once again thanks for taking the time and making theses posts, it's like you are inside our brains and make our secret wishes a real open proposition to red.

how much time they really are away from such camera's? It's been some time since dragon was announced. they're not sitting ducks. concerning high FPS probably the most limiting in current epic/dragon build are the SSD/dataspeed and the sensor or the read-out speed of the sensor; and since FPga stands for Field Programable.. how much of the real-time stuff that is happening inside the dragon could you drop to speed up handling the extra FPS another sensor could provide. must be a couple of testmodels somewhere in that vault of RED already with different sensors. since dragon handles roughly twice the pixels/s the MX does and the MX does 150fps@4K you'd think with other sensor tech and higher compression 300fps@4K without dropping to much other processes should be possible. so maybe another strength of the way they build their cameras is that a complete redesign will not be needed. squeezing 1000fps out of dragon processing hardware would probably need cutting away more than easily missed stuff like audio though (=

so how would RED MX-grade footage 4K@1000fps hold up against Phantom 4K anyway? I have played with phantom cameras at broadcast shows but never saw side by side. what would it take to beat phantom at their own game?

We only have experiences with the phantom gold, v10, V640 (same as the flex) and miro320s not the latest 4K, but in my experience the dynamic and color rendition of the Dragon (or MX for that matter) is lightyear ahead of them. but it make sense high speed seem like a very difficult thing to do..

Sustained, I'm craving for that... Unfortunately, it seems that red has decided to leave the efp/eng field open to competition, and is now concentrating on stage cameras and resolution. A pity, really. And Dragon has not quite matched expectations with respect to sensitivity. Some of the influent people in wildlife movies, supporters of red and early adopters from the beginning, have already moved to Sony and others.
 
Back in the day we used to shoot on Photosonics cameras filming special effects elements for film. The favoured speeds were 250fps, 500fps and a 1000fps. Somethings over a certain speed are less interesting than you would think. Including apples dipped in liquid nitrogen smashing on a concrete floor!
 
What makes you think the new, or redesigned special cameras, would have the same form factor as the Epic or would continue with the Modularity stacked idea? It's not a given that RED will continue that concept moving forward, all companies are constantly trying to make their kit newer better stronger faster, etc... I'm interested to see what the new form factor can and might be for any future RED camera. I do think a smaller form factor 4K cam would be awesome. Look at the A7s. :)
 
I was shooting on the Phantom Miro today next to my epic. There were many times shooting the Phantom on set I wished RED had a ultra high speed camera. Don't get me wrong the Phantom Miro is great. But its hard to go back to 1080p and Pro Res, and the Dynamic Range is big step back from being used to the MX. Imagine a Ultra high speed dragon that can shoot 1500fps with native ISO of 2000?
 
whether its an upgrade or whole new camera i hope red seriously makes one! but please give us some notice like pre orders or something so we have an idea when its coming! i miss the more open days with JJ giving us updates...made roadmaps for financing a lot easier then too
