  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What have you picked and why?

Honestly, in all likelihood we're going to enjoy shooting on our Canon-mount zooms for quite some time, but eventually that PL mount and the Red Pro Primes (widely regarded as the best value PL mount glass going) seems like a way better bet than buying a whole bunch of Canon-mount primes. It opens up the possibility of renting things like master primes and other really exotic glass too.

Ordered for the Scarlet PL Mount Package :)
Didn't want to take any chances with the quality of the mount. Can someone suggest a single lens appropriate for a "coming of age" + comedy movie look. Also other accessories like filters...

The "comedy movie look" is not really lens related. If you have gone with the PL mount, and only want one lens, you should look at the RED 17-50mm. That will probably be the best bang for the buck. You can use 67mm screw on filters with it if you don't wish to use a matte box. I believe I read that Contagion was shot with two prime lenses, the RPP 18m and RPP 35mm. These are both big lenses.

That lens really does look like tremendous value. Was Contagion really shot on two lenses? That's crazy! You'd think that a film with a budget like that could have a full set of RPPs and a couple of zooms if they wanted to. It's an interesting artistic choice to strip your kit so bare like that. I suppose creating limitations for yourself can sometimes inspire creativity though. :)

The more I look around at comparable primes for Canon EF mounts, the more those Red Pro Primes with a Titanium PL Mount start to look very reasonable indeed. I mean, compare their prices with those Zeiss CP.2 primes. Better yet compare the Zeiss zoom lens that sells for $30k that is based on the same technology with the 17-50mm T2.9 zoom that sells for $6,000. That is just ridiculous.

I agree Nick, the red primes are starting to look good. I bought the series of L's last year 16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200f2.8, and 100-400. All together they are about 10k. One could always justify another 10k on glass (glass keeps it's value). I live in Toronto too, want to split a set?

I'll probably shoot canon EF for the next 8-12 months and then look into a the red primes.

I got the 14k kit, plus a pack of 4 redvolts, and ordered a redmote, mattebox and a 128gb card. I may look at some point selling my scarlet and getting an Epic-X (or getting one and keeping the scarlet as a b-cam) I like the fact that everything is interchangeable, and one reason I'm extremely happy that scarlet grew up.

At this stage seeing what s-X is, I'd consider an epic over scarlet if I could get one, but R1 was not the right camera for what I do, and so have to wait.

Got the Brain, Side handle, red mote, base production package. I don't know why I got the AL mount but will switch to PL when RED contacts me. Still thinking about media/power/displays though. Can't wait, been renting for 3 years and now I'll be a owner very soon.

I ordered the package with the Al Canon mount. PL glass is expensive to own....and I have a few Zeiss ZFs, one is cine-modded. i plan to build out a whole modded Zeiss kit. I may upgrade to the Ti Canon mount because it's stronger than the Al and it's nice to know if a project requires PL glass, then I can grab the PL mount.

The EVF, another redvolt and redmag are on my Xmas list... Speaking of Xmas, I haven't been this excited about getting something since I was a little kid, sniffing around the christmas tree.

Hey Thanks again Stacey,
Do you recommend Red 17-50mm over Battle-Tested RED PRO 18-85mm T2.9 ZOOM? Both are priced the same, of course 18-85 is BT.
